Kusini Yengi is set for a return to League One this January, with five third-tier clubs, including Stockport County, pursuing a deal for the Aberdeen forward.
Joining the Pittodrie club from Portsmouth on a free transfer this summer, the Australian has found himself frozen out in Scotland, having not made a Premiership squad since November and has been an unused substitute in the UEFA Conference League.
Both player and club are set on an exit for Yengi this window, with previous reports in the Press and Journal stating that his camp felt he was used as a scapegoat for the poor start to Aberdeen’s season.
Hatters Look At Yengi
According to a new article from the Press and Journal, interest from six English clubs have emerged this January, with Stockport County battling fellow League One rivals Rotherham United, Wigan Athletic, Blackpool and Stevenage.
Also joined by League Two’s Gillingham, Yengi has a variety of destinations to pick from as part of his hopes to get into the Australia side heading to the 2026 World Cup.
It is believed that Aberdeen, who are under new management following the sacking of Jimmy Thelin, have entered talks with one of those sides, with a view to signing the 26-year-old on loan due to the finances of his contract making a permanent deal tricky.
Do County Need A Striker?
There have already been a few moves in and out of Edgeley Park this window, with the injured Nathan Lowe heading back to Stoke City and has subsequently been replaced by Josh Stokes.
With Kyle Wootton being a standout performer for Dave Challinor’s side this season, the need for a new forward may not be high, considering that Malik Mothersille, who was so successful at Peterborough United, could also fill in up front.
Benony Andresson is also a backup choice and made his first League One appearance in over a month last weekend with a 13-minute substitute appearance against Reading.
Other Destinations More Attractive
Out of the five clubs named in League One, two really stand out as options that Kusini Yengi should consider.
The first is Wigan Athletic, who are surely looking for support for Christian Saydee and Dara Costelloe following the exit of Paul Mullin. It would also reunite the former with his former Pompey teammate, which could be handy if Ryan Lowe wants an instant connection.
The other is Rotherham United, who let go of both Martin Sherif and Kion Etete as Matt Hamshaw looked for more reliable options, and given his credentials as a League One winner, Yengi will surely be a key target in their battle against relegation.
Nine goals in 26 League One appearances as John Mousinho’s side clinched the third-tier title is by no means a standout performance, but it will surely be enough to change a few games for a side like the Millers to avoid the drop.
