Stockport County have taken a further step in their quest for the League Two title after signing free agents Todd Kane and Ben Knight on deals until the end of the season, as confirmed via a statement on the club’s website.
The duo have penned deals until the end of the 2023/24 League Two campaign and will help to bolster Stockport County’s aspirations of lifting the fourth-tier title at the end of the current campaign, with the side currently sitting in the top three.
What can each player bring to the team?
Beginning with Todd Kane, the full-back has spent almost his entire career in the Championship, impressing most recently at Coventry City before his spell in Gibraltar at the end of 2023.
The defender will bring plenty of experience and leadership at the back for the club, especially as their form has dropped off since the turn of the year.
Meanwhile, Knight is a former Crewe Alexandra loanee and has experience in the EFL already and will have an idea of the physical demands that he will be expected to compete within.
He’s a talented winger and will bolster Stockport’s attacking options moving into the business end of the League Two season.
Why have these signings been made?
Since December, Stockport County have hit a difficult rough patch which has allowed the likes of Mansfield Town and Wrexham to catch them in the race for the League Two title and now extra bodies have become essential.
The club have won just two of their last seven league matches in a run that included a heavy 4-0 loss to Tranmere Rovers and a 3-1 loss to promotion rivals Crewe Alexandra.
How could this affect the title race?
Giving Stockport County further strength and depth in multiple areas of the pitch will massively bolster their chances of winning the league, especially bringing in a player like Todd Kane and Manchester City’s Ben Knight.
With Mansfield Town flying and Wrexham equally strong, Stockport had to act quickly otherwise they face slipping out of the top three all altogether and these arrivals certainly bolster their options moving forward.
