Stockport County Face January Transfer Battle Following Fresh Report

Stockport County could lose one of their prized assets in Jack Diamond this January, with multiple sides interested in making a move.

The Hatters have had a fairly promising start to their second season in League One, once again being in and around the promotion battle with Dave Challinor’s side in sixth place ahead of a weekend clash against Mansfield Town.

However, they may face the second half of the campaign without star midfielder Jack Diamond, who is subject to interest from multiple teams in the EFL Championship.

Report Reveals Diamond Transfer Interest

In a new report from Football League World, Jack Diamond could be on his way out of Edgeley Park at the start of 2026, with Derby County leading the pursuit of the 25-year-old attacking midfielder. John Eustace’s side is believed to be one of ‘a number’ of second-tier clubs looking into a potential move.

Diamond has been a standout for County this season, playing in 25 of their matches so far, with four goals and as many assists to his name across that period. He joined the club upon their promotion to League One from Carlisle United on a free transfer.

Derby’s interest could stem from the interest in on-loan attacker Ben Brereton Diaz, who has been utilised in the number 10 role by John Eustace with the outstanding form of Carlton Morris prior to his injury.

The Chilean international has been struggling at Pride Park this campaign, and reports from Sky Sport’s Luca Bendoni has suggested that MLS side Toronto FC are exploring their options in terms of a move for the former Sheffield United man.

A follow-up story from the Daily Echo has suggested that Diaz’s parent club in Southampton would not be against a sale of the forward, but an early release from his loan at Derby would need to be agreed in order to facilitate a move.

Can County Afford To Lose Diamond?

Should all the pieces fall into place, there is a possibility that Diamond becomes the subject of a bidding war next month between Championship sides. However, with his early-season contributions, it is likely that Stockport would be firm in turning down offers.

His eight direct goal contributions are only bettered by striker Kyle Wootton and Ollie Norwood, with the latter finally expected to return from injury this weekend following surgery on his leg.

With players competing to also play in an attacking midfield role like Malik Mothersille and Nathan Lowe both struggling to put up the same numbers, Challinor would definitely be unwilling to part with such a vital cog in his side midway through the season.
