Stockport County Missed Out On This League One Defender

Stockport County News

Stockport County missed out on the signing of Stevenage defender Kane Smith during the January transfer window, as revealed by Boro manager Steve Evans in his post-match interview with quotes via the Comet.

The 28-year-old has struggled with game-time in League One so far this season and was the subject of interest in January, but a conversation with the Stevenage boss kept the full-back at the football club and has now made his return to the squad.

What assurances did Steve Evans provide?

Despite not featuring for the League One side since November, Smith was persuaded to stick rather than twist by Evans following a conversation in the January transfer window.

The full-back has plenty of defensive competition at the League One side, but given the club remained in playoff contention all hands were very much needed on deck.

Speaking in his post-match interview, Steve Evans stated.

“Kane was good, a bit erratic in some of his passing at times but I think that’s just a rustiness. He has been unlucky week after week, and that’s because of options on the bench and Luther Wildin has been really good in that position.

“Plus, Kane has had a few injuries and a few little concerns, but I remember saying to the kid in January when big clubs like Stockport came calling, we kept him in the door because I said you can still play a big part in the season.

“I think he was surprised to be starting but he’s such a good professional and such a great kid, I think everyone in the camp will be pleased. He’s done well. Whether he can go again on Monday [against Charlton] we’ll need to see.”

How have Stockport County coped since the window closed?

Recently, Stockport County secured the permanent services of former Coventry City full-back Todd Kane on a free transfer to provide additional competition at the back for the League Two side.

Dave Challinor’s side had a tricky start to life after the January transfer window, picking up just one win in their first six matches, in a run that also saw the club lose 4-0 against Tranmere Rovers and slip off the top spot in the table.

Since that defeat however, Stockport are unbeaten in their last seven matches, including a huge 5-0 win against title rivals MK Dons.

What does his future hold?

During the previous summer, Smith penned a new and improved contract under Steve Evans but the length of which was never publicised.

However, since the deal was confirmed, Smith has only made ten appearances, which is only a third of the total he managed in League Two last season.

Whether his long-term future remains with Stevenage remains to be seen, but by the summer window, the defender could have a League One promotion medal under his belt which could make a significant difference in his plans.
