Stockport County trainee Duncan Watmore is awaiting a call ahead of a potential move to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in the coming days.
Watmore is currently without a club, following his departure from fellow Championship side Millwall in the summer – but his stint on the sidelines could be set to end in the coming days.
Sheffield Wednesday have been negotiating with the EFL to try and bring in several free agents due to injuries within their already-small squad.
Stockport trainee awaiting call
As reported by journalist Alan Nixon, Stockport County trainee Duncan Watmore is awaiting a phone call ahead of a possible move to Sheffield Wednesday.
The 31-year-old has been training with the League One side in order to maintain his fitness levels, whilst he remains in search of a new club for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign.
Sheffield Wednesday are closing in on a deal to sign experienced defender Liam Cooper on a free transfer, and this could open the door for Watmore to also follow suit.
Has Watmore done enough to justify another Championship stint?
Last season saw Watmore heavily involved for Millwall as they narrowly missed out on a place in the Championship play-off places.
He spent two and a half years with Millwall after his move from Middlesbrough and made almost 100 appearances for the club.
During the previous campaign, Watmore made 29 appearances across all competitions and contributed to six goals, with all six arriving in the second tier.
Could Stockport swoop in themselves?
Theoretically, Stockport County could swoop in themselves and try to sign Watmore on a short-term contract to try and bolster their own League One promotion aspirations.
Whether they need him remains to be seen, knowing there is an outside chance that they may be able to re-sign Louie Barry from Aston Villa in January.
However, it may be a scenario in which Watmore may only want a Championship move at the moment, thus ruling out Stockport entirely.
