Sunderland Target Move For League Two Star

Sunderland have joined the growing list of Championship sides that are considering a move for Notts County striker Macaulay Langstaff, according to journalist Darren Witcoop on X (Twitter).

The 27-year-old has reportedly attracted the interest of several Championship sides this summer including Sunderland despite being named as the Notts County club captain ahead of the 2024/25 season.

How did Langstaff fair last season?

Langstaff proved himself as a goalscorer in the National League for Notts County. In 50 National League games, he scored 41 goals. Despite that remarkable record, some questioned whether he could replicate that in the Football League.

Langstaff made sure to silence those doubters, scoring 28 goals in his first full season in League Two. He finished as the league’s top scorer, four goals clear of Paul Mullin and Matt Smith.

According to WhoScored, he had an average rating of 7.0 for the season. Langstaff had an xG/90 of 0.77, the highest of any Notts County player who played over ten games.

Who else is interested in Langstaff?

Witcoop named Swansea City as a new team who are interested in Langstaff this summer. The Swansea Independent also reported that Plymouth Argyle are now watching the striker.

Previously, the Sunderland Echo confirmed that Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Derby County, and Peterborough United as teams watching Langstaff. This was back in January, but Witcoop said teams decided Langstaff might not be able to make the step-up. The continued interest suggests teams might feel Langstaff is worth the risk.

How much would a deal for Langstaff cost?

Although there’s been no indication from Notts County that they’d sell or if they did, how much for. In January, the Sunderland Echo reported the fee would be around £1.5 million. After his successful goalscoring season, Notts County might want more for him.

Langstaff still has three years left on the contract that he signed last summer. The deal is set to end at the end of the 2026/27 season and could help Notts County secure more money for Langstaff.
