Rotherham United are preparing themselves for a tough battle against relegation from League One.
The Millers sit second bottom on 31 points, but have played a game less than Doncaster Rovers, who sit two points above them in 20th.
Manager Matt Hamshaw was backed by Tony Stewart in the transfer market. Several players joined the club, with Hamshaw saying that they “felt like a club again”.
However, they were well beaten by 10-man Cardiff City, leaving some fans worried about the club’s League One status.
It’s not just their fans that are concerned. Opta’s supercomputer has predicted the club will go down this season.
Opta Supercomputer Predicts Relegation for Rotherham United
According to the Opta Supercomputer, Rotherham fans should start preparing for life in League Two next season.
It’s predicted that the Millers will only pick up 50.87 points this season, which is just under 20 more than they have now.
Although that tally will see them finish 22nd, they will be just short of rivals Donny, who are predicted to finish 20th with 52.55 points.
Hamshaw’s side have been given a 52.6% chance of being relegated at the end of the season. The only two teams with a worse percentage are Port Vale (95.12%) and Burton Albion (54.54%).
How Does This Compare With the Opta Supercomputer Pre-Season Predictions?
One small bit of hope for Rotherham United fans might be just how wrong the supercomputer was before the season started.
Before a ball was picked, the Millers were predicted to finish 13th in League One, with 61.3 points. The latest prediction of 50.87 is 10.43 points behind their pre-season prediction.
The South Yorkshire side were given a 1.8% probability of winning the league and a 2.4% probability of finishing second. The Opta supercomputer did give Rotherham a 3.7% chance of finishing 6th.
Their probability of finishing in the bottom four was slightly higher. Opta gave the Millers a 4.9% chance of finishing 21st.
The Opta supercomputer prediction is far from a guarantee, as the pre-season predictions show. But it is concerning times for Rotherham United fans as we move closer to the end of the season.
