The 2025/26 WSL season is well underway, with every team apart from Liverpool and Aston Villa (for understandable reasons) having played three games. With that, the Opta Supercomputer has revealed its updated overall league prediction.
Chelsea currently lead the way after three games as they are unbeaten, having scored six goals and only conceded two. They haven’t looked all that convincing in the opening three games; however, they recorded a 2-1 victory on the opening day against another title favourite, Manchester City, and held on against both Villa and Leicester in stages too.
In the other Champions League spots currently sit Arsenal and Manchester United, who prior to their draw with each other at the weekend, were level on points with Chelsea. Both United and Arsenal have looked impressive in the early stages of the season too, especially Arsenal, the Champions League holders have made some impressive signings this summer and look to be a real contender for the title this time around.
Down the other end of the table sits West Ham, Liverpool and Villa. However, Liverpool and Villas fixture from Sunday was cancelled due to the tragic passing of former boss Matt Beard. However, West Ham have looked poor so far, they have conceded 10 goals in their opening three games and only scored two. They have 0 points and things aren’t looking good at all.
Even though we are only three games into the new WSL season, the supercomputer at statistics and data experts Opta have been busy analysing to try to predict who will win the title, be in the Champions League, and be relegated to the new format of a relegation play-off, i.e. face off against the third-placed side from WSL2.
Opta Supercomputer WSL Prediction – Relegation play off
The WSL has a new relegation process this season after the Championship became the WSL2. It used to just be the bottom placed club in the WSL would go down and the Championship winners would be promoted. However this season the top two in the WSL2 will be automatically promoted and the third placed team will face a play-off with the 12th-placed side in the WSL1 to see who will be in the top flight the following season. This is all changed as for the 2026/27 season and going forward the WSL1 will consist of 14 teams instead of 12.
Anyway, West Ham after their extremely poor start to the season are the ones the supercomputer has predicted will finish 12th this season and potentially be relegated from the WSL. They have an expected points of 18 and a relegation play-off percentage of 37.03%.
Champions League spots
The next best thing to winning the WSL title is achieving a spot in the UWCL. Last season, Arsenal may not have won the league as Chelsea dominated, but they won the Champions League in May after beating Barcelona. The WSL offers three Champions League spots every season, one goes to the title winners and then another two are up for grabs for the teams who finish second and third.
These spots at present are occupied by Arsenal and Manchester United. But let’s see what the supercomputer says…
3rd – Arsenal
Long time successors in the WSL and current UWCL holders have been predicted by the supercomputer to finish third in the WSL this season and therefore achieve Champions League football yet again. They have an 8.91% of achieving CL football for next season and also a 8.91% of winning the title. The Gunners are expected to finish on 45 points.
2nd – Manchester City
City are another one of the big WSL clubs who have saw somewhat of a transitional period over the last few seasons. They’ve suffered a lot of near misses when it comes to the title, especially in the 2023/24 season, they finished level on points with Chelsea but their goal difference wasn’t good enough. The club failed to make the Champions League for this current season but the supercomputer has them down to finish second this year and gives them a 10.33% chance of being in the competition next year. It has them predicted to finish just one point better off than Arsenal with 46.
They’ve got there season off to a decent start and currently sit in fourth place, just one point behind Arsenal and Utd.
WSL Champions prediction – Chelsea
For anyone who has watched or followed the WSL for the last ten years or so, it will come as no surprise that yet again Chelsea are the supercomputers prediction for winning the title. Sonia Bompastor took over from the great Emma Hayes last season and the Blues stormed their way to the title with 60 points. They were 12 points clear of Arsenal and absolutely dominated. As I mentioned earlier they are currently the only team to go unbeaten in their opening three games of the new season and sit comfortably at the top of the table.
Their expected points total has gone down to 54 points in comparison to their 60 from last season, but they still have a whopping 77.5% chance of winning the title and therefore achieving CL football again too.

The WSL is definitely known to throw up a few shocks and surprises every season though, I predicted Arsenal would win the league this season and I still think out of all the big teams, Arsenal are the best chance of knocking Chelsea off their perch and achieve WSL title success for the first time since 2019. But we will have to wait until next May to see if the supercomputer has predicted correctly…
WSL prediction in summary
- Chelsea to win the league for the 7th time in a row
- Arsenal and Manchester City to grab other two Champions League spots
- West Ham Utd into the WSL relegation play-off
