It’s been revealed that Bristol Rovers have committed a six-figure fee to land Joe Quigley from Oldham Athletic as they continue to reshape their squad in a bid to avoid another damaging relegation.

The move underlines the seriousness of Rovers’ situation. Following last season’s relegation from League One, expectations were that the Gas would be competing towards the upper half of the division. Instead, they have found themselves dragged into another survival scrap, sitting just above the relegation places and searching for solutions to a blunt attacking record.

Goals have been the clearest issue. Rovers have struggled to convert possession into end product, managing only a modest return from their opening set of league fixtures. That lack of cutting edge has already prompted January reinforcements, with Callum Morton and Mees Rijks added to the forward line, yet the decision to sanction a six-figure fee for Quigley suggests the club felt further action was required before the window closed.

Quigley arrives from Oldham Athletic after a relatively short spell back in the Football League. His time at Boundary Park produced three goals in 23 appearances, numbers that may not leap off the page, but Rovers are clearly backing his experience and physical profile to offer something different to their existing options.

At 29, Quigley has built a career largely across the National League and its feeder divisions, with spells at clubs such as Yeovil Town, Chesterfield and Forest Green Rovers shaping him into a seasoned, robust centre forward. His most productive period came with Chesterfield, where he was part of the side that secured promotion back to the EFL, and Rovers will be hoping that know-how proves valuable during the run-in.

The fee itself is significant context. For a club in Bristol Rovers’ current league position, committing six figures in the winter window is a calculated gamble. It reflects both the pressure on the hierarchy to stabilise the campaign and a belief that the squad, as previously constructed, lacked the tools to pull clear of danger.

Head coach Steve Evans has repeatedly stressed that spending alone does not guarantee results, a point borne out across the EFL every season. However, this move suggests a clear willingness from the club to back his judgement and give him additional firepower for the relegation fight.

Whether Quigley can immediately repay that faith remains an open question. His recent scoring record is modest, and stepping into a side short on confidence can be a difficult task for any striker. Yet his physical presence, experience of promotion battles and familiarity with pressure situations are qualities Rovers believe can make a difference.
