Swansea City Set to Secure Swedish Sensation

Swansea City

Talented Swedish midfielder Melker Widell is close to joining Championship side Swansea City after a deal was agreed with his current club Aalborg. However, the Swede will rejoin his current club on loan for the rest of the season as a part of the deal.

With an influx in funds from the sale of Matt Grimes as well as a substantial sell-on fee thanks to the Morgan Whittaker sale to Middlesbrough, Swansea will be looking to bring in multiple players before the end of the transfer window.

They look to have found a long-term solution, with a talented midfielder set to make the move to SA1 from Denmark.

Widell to Swansea?

According to Tom Coleman, Swansea have agreed a fee with Aalborg for the signing of Swedish international midfielder Melker Widell, with the Swans agreeing to loan the 22-year-old back to his current club for the rest of the season.

Widell is set to join Swansea for a substantial fee, with the Welsh side believed to have completed the deal with a loan clause to fend off Premier League and international interest in the player.

The Swede is thought to have massive potential going forward for the Swans, with his adaptability throughout the midfield being one of his many fantastic assets.

Is the Loan Beneficial?

With the fee Swansea are spending on their new man, you would like to think that they would rather keep their new signing, especially considering the poor run of form they are currently suffering through.

However, if sending Widell on loan back to Aalborg means that they can fend off interest from bigger clubs at higher levels, it would definitely be worth the wait to get their man next season.

After a multiple-year period with many lacklustre signings, Swansea would likely rather wait for a player with Widell’s potential, rather than spend their money on another player who will not be impactful in their side.

Where Will He Play?

Widell is traditionally used as a box-to-box midfielder for Aalsborg, with him also playing games in the number ten role.

With Swansea’s current midfield options being more defensive-minded compared to Widell, the 22-year-old’s progressive style of football could be a huge difference-maker for the Welsh unit.

Luke Williams may look to switch his style of play without Grimes next season, and Widell could be a huge drive behind a more progressive look to the Swansea midfield.
