Swindon Town have confirmed the loan departure of academy star Sonny Hart to Isthmian League Premier Division side Canvey Island, according to a statement on the club’s website.
The defender has played a key role in the Swindon Town Academy side, having made appearances in the FA Youth Cup as well as the Youth League. This will mark his third spell away from the club, having previously spent time at Harrow Borough and Gloucester City.
What did the Swindon Town Under-18 boss say?
Speaking to the club’s official media, Under-18s Manager, Sean Wood added:
“Sonny continues his individual development on loan at Canvey Island and he has played a pivotal part of the Under-18s programme defensively this season.
“This opportunity will give Sonny a perfect opportunity to expand and learn more about his game defensively while another experience of Men’s football.”
Season Analysis
A disastrous season for the senior side
Swindon’s season has gone from promising, to bad, to worse to near disaster throughout the campaign. After an exciting, goal-scoring couple of months at the start of the 23/24 season, Michael Flynn’s side soon dropped off. Their in-form attack often covered for the weak defence, so once the goals dried up and the dynamic loan duo of Jake Young and Dan Kemp departed it seemed inevitable that the League Two side would begin to drop down the table. This ultimately cost Flynn his job.
The somewhat bizarre decision to all but right off the season by not appointing a new manager until the summer, with Gavin Gunning taking charge on an interim basis could bring the side to their lowest-ever finish. Had Michael Flynn’s side not had the electric start they had, then they may well have been fighting with Forest Green Rovers, Colchester United and Sutton United to stay in the EFL.

The rot spreads
The side hasn’t been helped by ongoing off-field issues, and despite their attempts to use the Fair Game initiative to present themselves as a more transparent outfit, this wouldn’t have prevented the two charges they have faced this season. The restrictions on the transfer budget, alongside the embarrassing debacle with the shares only pours more fuel onto a fan base fed up with what is being presented to them from almost all levels of the organisation. The one shining light has been the Academy’s success in the FA Youth Cup. There appears to be a huge difference between owner Clem Morfuni’s declaration that things aren’t good enough, and what is actually going on.
This could be one of the most pivotal summers in the club’s history. Should they not address the glaring issues, fans and the other teams in League Two… will not let them get away with it.
