League Two side Swindon are set to sign 22-year-old former academy prospect Archie Matthews, according to Tom Coleman’s tweet.

The 22-year-old has recently been on loan to Cymru Premier team Penybont.

If the deal goes ahead, this will be a return to his first club as a player. Matthews is a former youth academy prospect of Swindon, playing a few times in their 2020-21 relegation season when called upon.

Who is Archie Matthews?

Matthews has made one appearance for Penybont on loan, conceding 1 goal. Since signing for the Swans, the 22-year-old is yet to feature for the Welsh outfit. Matthews joined the Championship outfit in 2022 on a free transfer after leaving fellow Championship club Birmingham City.

Matthews started his career as a 15-year-old in Swindon’s Under-18 Team on a scholarship. He had three loan spells at Southern League teams Melksham Town, AFC Totton and Thatcham Town before making a permanent switch to Birmingham City. He has made only nine first-team appearances (excluding friendlies and non-league teams) since 19/20.

Who are the interested parties?

According to Tom Coleman, Swindon Town are the only club interested in the signature of their former youth goalkeeper. There has been no financial information regarding what percentage of the player’s wages that Swindon are willing to play nor how much Birmingham wants them to pay.

How have the Robins faired this season?

After 29 games, Gavin Gunning’s side is 14th in League Two, winning ten matches. They are seven points behind the play-off places, winning two of their past five games.

Writer’s View

Swindon have just one senior goalkeeper after Lewis Ward left for Charlton Athletic. This means they are sure to make a quick move to swoop in for Archie’s signature if they want to have two senior goalkeepers. They know what he is all about, with him being a Swindon player from 14/15 years old. This could be a good move for him if he gets to play.
