Huddersfield Town are reportedly working hard to complete a deal to sign Championship midfielder Marc Leonard from Birmingham City as their summer recruitment continues.Â
The Terriers have already brought in several ‘big names’ ahead of their second League One campaign, with the likes of Derby County‘s Marcus Harness, Crystal Palace’s Owen Goodman and Lincoln City’s Sean Roughan already onboard.
However, it appears as though Huddersfield are far from finished in terms of recruitment ahead of their season opener against Leyton Orient in less than two weeks time.
Leonard to Huddersfield?
As reported by journalist Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, Huddersfield Town are in the process of trying to complete a deal to sign Birmingham City midfielder Marc Leonard this summer.
The midfielder has fell out of favour at St. Andrews despite only joining the club last summer and Birmingham are prepared to sanction his exit from the club, with both loan and permanent moves being on the table.
Leonard is under contract at Birmingham until June 2028, suggesting that a permanent exit whilst realistic could also prove to be on the expensive side.
Similarly, Huddersfield aren’t the only side in the running, with fellow Championship and MLS clubs also in the mix.
How did he fare last season?
Leonard joined the Blues on a permanent deal 12 months ago after impressing in the third tier with Northampton Town during a loan stint from Brighton Hove Albion.
However, it appeared very early on that Leonard wasn’t the first name on the team sheet for Chris Davies and that had a knock-on effect on his minutes last season.
The 23-year-old did feature 45 times across all competitions last season, but only averaged 50 minutes per game throughout the entire campaign.
During that time, Leonard contributed to five goals for the Blues, but the arrival of Tommy Doyle from Wolverhampton Wanderers is likely to have pushed the midfielder further down the pecking order.
Huddersfield to make it a double?
Despite their chase for Marc Leonard’s signature being ongoing, he isn’t looking likely to be the only Birmingham City player heading for a move to the Terriers.
That’s because Birmingham talisman Alfie May is closing in on a move to Huddersfield Town himself, with a seven-figure deal reportedly agreed between the two clubs.
May played a crucial role in Birmingham’s promotion from League One last season and they’ll be an overriding expectation that both him and Leonard will bring that experience and quality into the Terriers and ensure they get themselves over the line.
Huddersfield missed out on the play-off places altogether last season after a disappointing second half of the season, but the signings they are making is placing them as a serious threat this time around.
