Tottenham Hotspur Battle Premier League Rivals for Star

Mathys Tel Bayern Munich

Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel. Spurs are willing to pay around €60m (£50.2m) for the 19-year-old.

The Frenchman has been linked to several European clubs over the past few weeks. This comes after Tel’s game time has become limited due to Harry Kane’s form at Bayern.

This is according to L’Equipe who state that Tel and his agent are taking their time to make a decision.

Who else is after Mathys Tel?

Spurs are not the only club interested in signing Tel. Other clubs, including Chelsea and Aston Villa, have inquired about the Frenchman’s services according to Florian Plettenberg.

Villa are looking for another forward with striker Jhon Duran on the verge of joining Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr.

Spurs will hope Tel can be the catalyst to turn around a, so far, dismal Premier League campaign. The North London side currently sit 15th in the English top-flight.

How has he performed this season?

Tel is yet to score for Bayern Munich this season but has only started two Bundesliga games. The Frenchman has had the daunting task of competing with Kane for a starting place at the German giants.

However, the forward did register 16 goal contributions for Bayern last season.

The former Rennes attacker is in the 93rd percentile for both shots taken per 90 minutes (3.57) and pass completion rate (83.4%). This means that only seven per cent of players in his position have recorded better numbers in these areas.

Should Tel make the move to Spurs? – Opinion

With other clubs after his signature, should he make the move to Spurs?

Under the guidance of an attacking coach such as Ange Postecoglou, the Frenchman could find himself as Spurs’ first-choice striker. Dominic Solanke’s recent injury should also give Tel more minutes as a starter.

If Tel is looking for a club favouring an attacking philosophy and a place where he could become the starting striker, Spurs should be at the top of his list.
