Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that they have made the decision to part with Ange Postecoglou ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
Since joining the club almost two seasons ago, Ange has led the club to a 5th-place finish in the 2023/24 season and, more recently, a 17th-place finish.
This would be the lowest position Tottenham have ever finished in the Premier League era, and their worst top-flight finish since their relegation to the Second Division in 1977.
Why have Tottenham decided to sack Ange Postecoglou?
Although there is currently no official statement from the club, Football Insider reported on Sunday, June 1, that Tottenham decided to sack Ange Postecoglou on the day that the summer transfer window opened.
Despite Spurs and Postecoglou parting ways, it might be arguable whether his time was a failure. Yes, he finished 17th, although it could be ironically considered that this end was due to Ange focusing on laying his legacy by winning a trophy.
Postecoglou did just that, winning the UEFA Europa League, Tottenham‘s first trophy in 17 years and their first trophy in Europe since winning the UEFA Cup in 1984.
He gave Tottenham a bus parade, an event which would be iconic for any club, despite Spurs turning down the opportunity after winning the Carling Cup in 2008.
There will be arguments that Postecoglou’s 17th-place finish was partially due to copious amounts of injuries, particularly at the back. This led to youngsters playing out of position, such as 18-year-old Archie Gray, who was signed from Leeds United in 2024 to play as a midfielder but was occasionally taking up a centre-half role.
However, even when first-team players started to return, the results didn’t improve, and Ange Postecoglou left Tottenham Hotspur with their worst points return in the top-flight since 1915. It should be noted that until 1981, only two points were awarded for a win.
Who will Tottenham Hotspur replace Postecoglou with?
In addition to the decision to sack Ange Postecoglou, there have also been reports that several managers from the Premier League have been considered as replacements.
One of these is Bournemouth‘s Andoni Iraola, who has had an impressive impact on the Cherries, leading the club to a record high finish of 9th in the top tier. Although Iraola probably wouldn’t have been tempted by the opportunity before Tottenham won the Europa League, perhaps the opportunity to manage in the Champions League would prove too tempting for the Spaniard.
In addition to Iraola, Thomas Frank has also been brought up as a name to take up the role. Frank has been in charge of Brentford since the 2018/19 season, and has led the London club to four consecutive seasons in the top flight. Speaking to TalkSport in October, Thomas Frank said, “Who knows what will happen in the future. Maybe I will stay here for many years. I’m open, maybe something happens.”
The most likely hire would be Fulham’s Marco Silva, Football Insider reported last month. The manager took Fulham up in 2022 and has stabilised the club in the Premier League. There could be an opportunity for the manager to further progress his career beyond the mid-table at Tottenham, although it would be expected that it’ll take a few seasons for Spurs to be competing right at the top of the table again.
It is expected that Tottenham will officially announce their decision to sack Ange Postecoglou and who will replace the Australian in the coming days.
