Grimsby Town are set to make a decision on trialist Tolu Ladapo after today’s game at York City, according to BackOTN.

The 20-year-old has been on trial with the club this summer after departing League One side Charlton Athletic. The centre-forward only made one appearance for the Addicks, a late cameo appearance in the EFL Trophy against Gillingham in 2022.

He spent a period on loan at Hungerford last season but failed to make an impact at his parent club.

BBC journalist Matt Dean had asked manager David Artell if he was planning on offering the player a contract on Humberside Sport, to which the former Crewe boss responded “We’ll see”.

However, our sister site BackOTN has revealed further information regarding the situation, they state:

“But BackOfTheNet sources were informed earlier today that Grimsby wasn’t planning on rushing into a decision after the game and said they’d like to make a decision after the York game on Saturday.”

A big season for David Artell and Grimsby Town

The Mariners struggled last season, despite eventually putting some daylight between themselves and relegated Sutton, there were periods where fans started to question whether a season in the National League was inevitable.

David Artell took over mid-season and despite some promising signs had to adapt his style of play to suit the situation the club found themselves in. His slick passing and attacking play had to make way for a more robust defensive style tactic that is the opposite of what the former Crewe Alexandra manager is known for.
However, now with a full summer transfer window and a pre-season Artell has the time and resources to create a side that is capable of following his instructions and tactics as they target a higher finish.

They have already added George McEachran from Swindon Town, Lewis Cass, Tyrell Warren, Matty Carson, Cameron McJannett, Jason Svanthorsson and goalkeeper Jordan Wright in a transformative window for the Lincolnshire based side.

It will be interesting to see if the signings will spell success next season.
