Championship outfit West Brom will attempt to convince former current Tottenham coach Ryan Mason to become take over as their new manager, following Tony Mowbray’s recent dismissal.
West Brom’s promotion hopes took a huge hit this Easter weekend, with losses to play-off rivals Coventry City and relegation-threatened Derby County leaving the Baggies six points adrift of sixth with two games remaining.
These results saw Albion and Tony Mowbray part ways, with the club all but set to be playing in the Championship for a fifth season running.
With this in mind, West Brom appear to be planning for the 2025-26 campaign, with Alan Nixon reporting former Tottenham player and manager Ryan Mason to be at the top of the club’s wish list.
The 33-year-old is currently playing a key role in Ange Postecoglou’s staff and is a highly respected figure at Tottenham Hotspur, having filled in as club manager on two occasions in 2021 and 2024.
Who is Ryan Mason?
Making his way through the youth ranks at Tottenham Hotspur, Mason made his playing debut in 2008, going on to represent Doncaster Rovers, Millwall, and Hull City throughout his career – earning an England cap in 2015.
However, a promising career met a tragic end, after a fractured skull in 2018 forced the midfielder into an early retirement.
Picking up the pieces, Mason earned his coaching badges and became the youngest-ever Premier League manager as a 29-year-old in his first reign as interim at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Could Mason be tempted by West Brom?
With Tottenham’s Europa League campaign still underway, an immediate move is doubtful until the season’s conclusion.
However, it is certainly a role to be considered by the former international.
Having filled in as head coach in North London amid Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte’s respective departures, a full-time managerial position in the Championship may feel timely for the young coach.
With little chance to implement any notable playing style during his interim tenures with Spurs, the coach would likely have a full summer and pre-season at the Hawthorns to instill his ideas.
Also, with the club often competitive in the second tier and looking to rebuild amid Carlos Corberan’s departure, the West-Midlands outfit could provide a good platform for a young coach.
As previously mentioned, Mason’s full focus will be on Tottenham’s Europa League semi-final against Bodo/Glimt; however, the report states that West Brom are willing to be patient.
While the move for a young coach with minimal full-time experience is risky from West Brom’s perspective, current pedigree as a coach would suggest that now is the time for Mason to take to full-time management.
