Championship club West Bromwich Albion have announced a potentially damaging setback to their play-off hopes. West Brom currently sit sixth in the table and are still looking for a new manager.

Catastrophic injury dent to play-off hopes!

The midland club’s top goal scorer Josh Maja has suffered an “injury to his lower leg”. He will “undergo surgery in the coming days”. The striker is “set to miss several weeks”, which will be a massive blow for the baggies. This comes at a time when Albion are also without striker Daryl Dike who has suffered numerous injuries during his time at the club. Maja has netted 12 times in 26 league games for West Brom this season.

New man to step up?

Devante Cole was signed by West Brom in the summer as a free transfer. Cole has not started a game this season in the championship. This could change with the injury to Maja, as the club looks for someone to step up. The son of Andy Cole has not yet scored a competitive goal for his new club, despite his 12 appearances. Alternatively, Albion could look to move Karlan Grant into the striker role, who has been played out wide on the left so far this season. Grant is second behind Maja in the club goalscorer list, netting six times this season.

Troubled times for West Brom!

The news of Maja’s injury comes at a bad time for Albion, it’s not the first time the club have been in the news this week. Carlos Corberan left the club on Christmas day and have been without a manager since. It seemed all was agreed with manager Ralph Wicky, however talks broke down due to backroom staff issues. Club legend Chris Brunt has been in charge on an interim basis since. The baggies have only won once since Corberan’s exit, in a 3-1 win over Preston North-End.
