Premier League West Ham United are considering sacking former Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo as relegation looms.
The Hammers only brought in the 51-year-old in September on a three-year deal after Graham Potter failed bring success to the capital once again. However, he has also been unable to turn around the club’s form.
In his 12 games in charge, Nuno has only been able to guide his side to two wins, four draws whilst suffering six defeats.
Their form is not much better, with their last victory coming in early November as they continue their run of seven games without victory.
West Ham to Sack Nuno Espirito Santo
According to a report by TeamTalk, officials are internally considering parting company with Nuno in an attempt to avoid relegation.
The Hammers are sat in the relegation zone, five points from safety and showing little sign of turning it around.
With the January transfer window looming, it could be now or never to give any potential replacement adequate time to assess his squad and make decisions on their future.
Slaven Bilic Return on the cards?
Prior to appointing Nuno to the London Stadium, West Ham were considering bringing former Hammers boss Slaven Bilic back to the club.
The experienced coach remains a potential option and is available after leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Fateh in 2024.
Bilic took charge between 2015 and 2017, winning 42 of his 111 games.
Are West Ham United Right to Sack Nuno?
It is clear that Nuno has not been able to rediscover the magic that made him such a success with Nottingham Forest. However, it is worth noting that the 51-year-old is still primarily playing with a side built for Graham Potter’s very different style of football.
The decision to appoint Nuno, a coach who prefers a more direct approach straight after Potter can be a decision placed solely on the board. But, more should be expected of the experience Premier League boss than is on display.
The right thing to do would be to allow him to utilise the January transfer window to better implement his style with new recruits. However, with relegation from the Premier League holding such a high cost for clubs, it is unlikely we see them gamble with their top flight status.
Is Bilic the Right Man?
Bilic is the safe option, he knows the club, the fans know him and he does have experience of turning round a club’s form.
Whether he can be the man for the long term is another question.
He is certainly not an exciting option, and is unlikely to be able to take West Ham up to challenging to Europe once again.
The objective now though is survival and he may just hold the cards to do that.
Bilic will be able to adapt quickly, both to the club, the fans and the league, meaning a new manager bounce is highly likely. He will be able to avoid the usual bedding in period of a newer or unfamiliar boss.
One other point that may work in in his favour is his Championship CV.
He has managed in the second tier with both West Brom and Watford, meaning that if relegation does happen, he will be well equipped to continue their push.
West Ham United face Brighton and Hove Albion at home on the 30th December in a make or break Premier League fixture.
