West Ham United are close to signing a new striker as the start of the new Premier League season edges closer.
The Hammers have made several signings this summer already. Jean-Clair Todibo, El Hadji Malick Diouf, Kyle Walker-Peters and Daniel Cummings have all joined the club ahead of the new season.
With Graham Potter’s first full season bringing new hope to West Ham fans, they are on the brink of signing Callum Wilson.
West Ham Close to Signing Wilson
The BBC have confirmed that West Ham have agreed a deal to sign former Newcastle United and Bournemouth striker Wilson. The deal is expected to see Wilson join West Ham on a 12-month contract.
Wilson departed Newcastle at the end of last season and has been without a club since. It now appears that he will be returning to the Premier League this season.
Wilson is a Proven Premier League Striker
West Ham will be signing a proven Premier League striker in Wilson. He’s scored 88 goals in 239 games and has a goal every 185 minutes.
Despite his vast experience, last season was a struggle for Wilson. He started just two Premier League games and made 18 appearances in total. The forward averaged just 20 minutes per game and played a total of 368 minutes.
Disappointingly, he failed to score a single goal in the league. He had 0.3 shots per game and 0.1 shots on target per game, something that was not helped by his lack of minutes for Newcastle United.
Last season was somewhat of an anomaly for Wilson. In the 2023/24 season, he scored nine goals in 20 games, which included only nine starts. The previous season, he scored 18 goals in 31 starts.
Is This a Good Move for Wilson and West Ham?
On paper, this appears to be a good bit of business. West Ham haven’t had the best of luck with strikers in recent years.
Niclas Füllkrug joined the Hammers last season but hasn’t made the impact he or the club likely hoped for. The German scored just three goals in the league but did miss chunks of the season because of injury.
Wilson’s signing will provide competition for the big German. Potter will likely hope the two push each other to score goals to keep their place in the starting lineup when given a chance.
