What is Non-League Day?

Non League Day

The 2025 countdown to Non-League Day is officially underway, with there being just over three weeks to go until football fans across the UK are encouraged to go and pay a visit to their local club and enjoy the perks that semi-professional football has to offer.

Every year, Non-League clubs from the National League to the 11th tier of English football come together to try and raise awareness for their side, create attractive ticket pricing and prove to supporters that instead of staying home and watching TV on a Saturday afternoon – you could instead go out and support your local team.

Here at ‘The Deck’, as stated on our National League Twitter (X) account, admin Callum will be delivering you one Non-League article every single day in March from the 1st, up until Non-League Day on the 22nd. These will be scheduled for a 10am release every single day.

This article will break down everything you need to know about Non-League day, it’s origins, when it takes place and how you can find your nearest fixture.

What exactly is Non-League day?

Football fan James Doe founded Non-League day back in 2010, after he took inspiration from a pre-season friendly involving Championship side Queen’s Park Rangers.

Following media attention, it quickly became a recognised feature within the footballing calendar and has been backed by plenty of charities, celebrities and local MP’s.

Non-League day is a day to get down and support your local side, raise funds for that side, raise awareness for the volunteers and staff that spend hundreds of hours each season making sure that they do their bit within the community.

Most importantly, it’s a day to have fun, make memories and potentially find yourselves a new club to follow each week.

Instead of sitting on your sofa during another dull international break, you could be having a drink and meet up with friends, accessing cheaper football and creating a memorable Saturday afternoon.

When is Non-League day?

For 2025, Non-League day will officially take place on Saturday 22nd March – purposely taking place during the international break in order to try and persuade more football fans to get out and watch football they may not be entirely accustomed too.

With the Premier League, Championship and the majority of League One clubs being out of action and England facing Albania on Friday evening – many fans across the country will be left with a free afternoon.

What are the benefits of supporting local?

There are many benefits for your average football fan to try and support their local Non-League side.

For example, the cost of football is increasing year upon year and many working class fans are being constantly priced out of the ability to afford to go and support their usual clubs.

Some supporters like myself also have young children who may be too young or not entirely ready to face big crowds. Therefore, a trip to their local Non-League club will provide valuable bonding/family time which increases the chances of repeat visits.

Unlike your typical Premier League sides, almost all Non-League teams rely heavily on their fans to get by season-upon-season, with the money you spend on tickets/food/merchandise directly helping the club itself.

Your money can play a significant role in the financial side of a Non-League club – especially further down the pyramid.

When purchasing a ticket to a Premier League or EFL game, sometimes there are uncertainties as to where your money is directly impacting. For clubs in Non-League, supporters income can help fund stadium developments, kit/equipment or even go towards player wages – helping a team get by.

Where can you find your local match?

Some supporters will already know their local Non-League side, but for some there may be other factors that can affect knowledge.

For example, a person new to an area or someone that regularly follows a ‘big’ club may not be familiar with local Non-League football.

Fortunately, the official Non-League day website has a map feature, allowing fans to type in their postcode and it will in-turn display all local matches on the day in your area.

You can access this by clicking here.

Readers, will you be participating in Non-League day this year and if so, what game will you be attending?
