Swindon Town are set to release defender Frazer Blake-Tracy once his contract expires at the end of the season, as confirmed by journalist Joe Acklam on Twitter, but what could be next for him?
The 28-year-old is expected to be the first in a string of exits for the League Two side following their disappointing end to the 2023/24 campaign as teams slowly begin to publish their retained lists.
Despite his departure approaching, Blake-Tracy had been a frequent member of the Swindon squad in all competitions this season, making 40 appearances in total.
During that time, the defender contributed to six goals and has captained the League Two side at various points throughout the course of the 2023/24 campaign.
Since the turn of the year, Blake-Tracy has failed to feature in just three league games and will leave the football club after two seasons with Swindon Town.
With that being said, let’s take a look at four potential options for Blake-Tracy this summer…
Cheltenham Town
Darrell Clarke’s side are currently in a final-day relegation showdown in League One, where either themselves, Burton Albion or Cambridge United will be relegated down to League Two.
The club have relied on loanees throughout the season as well as the experienced Curtis Davies and are likely to require at least two new centre-backs ahead of next season.
Blake-Tracy is located less than an hour away from Cheltenham and the two clubs have recently done business together with Liam Kinsella joining in January that could prove persuasive in terms of a potential destination this summer.
Gillingham
Following a similar trend, Gillingham narrowly missed out on the play-off places in League Two this campaign, due to a lack of consistency as well as a frustrating goal return.
Blake-Tracy has proven this season that he has the ability to contribute to goals when needed and featured in both of Swindon’s league matches against the Gills meaning they are likely to be familiar with him.
With the 28-year-old possessing League One and Two experience as well as having the versatility to play either centre-back or left-back, he’s an option that the Gills are almost certainly likely to consider.
Crawley Town
Being under the management of Scott Lindsey could play a major role in persuading someone like Blake-Tracy to join the Red Devils this summer if they don’t manage to seal promotion back to League One.
During his reign in charge, Blake-Tracy featured in almost all matches for Swindon Town as a starter under Lindsey, contributed to two league goals and missed just one match in total in League Two.
With Crawley likely to want to challenge for the playoffs again next season (providing they aren’t promoted), they will need to focus on tightening up defensively and someone like Blake-Tracy could help to do that.
Colchester United
Finally, Danny Cowley’s Colchester United are involved in a final-day relegation shootout in League Two with either themselves or Sutton United joining Forest Green Rovers in the National League next season.
However, the Cowleys are likely to be desperate to improve next season and push further up the League Two standings and adding a player of Blake-Tracy’s quality is likely to contribute to achieving that.
The 28-year-old would improve the options they already have and is based in the south of the country as it is, meaning it could be seen as an attractive prospect for the League Two side this summer.
What are your thoughts on this list and would you take him at your EFL side?
