Where Are the Juventus Scudetto Winners of 2019/20 Now?

Juventus Motta

Juventus are one of the biggest and most well-known football clubs in Europe and are the most successful club in Italy. From 2011 to 2020, Juventus won the Scudetto a record-breaking nine times consecutively, taking their total to 36—technically 38, but two were stripped away due to the Calciopoli scandal—more than any other club.

Their 36th title was won on July 26th 2020 with a 2-0 home win vs Sampdoria crowning them as champions, with goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and second-half substitute Federico Bernardeschi.

However, since then, times have been hard for the Bianconeri. A mixture of issues both on and off the pitch have resulted in the Old Lady not winning the title since their triumph back in 2020.

With the club currently sitting 4th in Serie A, and seemingly out of the Scudetto race after a 4-0 humiliation at the hands of Atalanta, let’s take a look at where the starting 11 from their historic day five years ago, find themselves now.

Juventus XI vs Sampdoria: Where are they now?

Manager: Maurizio Sarri

Starting with the manager in charge that day, Maurizio Sarri joined Juventus following a spell in the Premier League with Chelsea. The 2019/20 season would turn out to be his only season in charge of Juve as he was sacked despite guiding the club to their ninth successive Scudetto, the first major honour of his career.

Following his dismissal, he joined Lazio in July 2021 and later resigned in 2024. He has been out of work since.

Wojciech Szczęsny

In goal, that day was Wojciech Szczesny. Szczesny, now 34, joined the club from Arsenal in 2017 following a loan spell at AS Roma. He was with the club for seven years before retiring in the summer.

The former Poland international performed a miraculous u-turn however and joined Barcelona in October following an injury to Marc-Andre ter Stegen. He has played 15 times for the Spanish giants and featured in their recent UEFA Champions League clash with Benfica.

Alex Sandro

Alex Sandro joined Juventus back in 2015 from FC Porto and went on to make an impressive 327 appearances for the club.

He departed, similarly to Szczęsny, in the Summer of 2024 to join Brazilian side Flamengo. The left-back has made 19 appearances so far this season for the seven-time Brazilian champions, scoring one goal.

Leonardo Bonucci

One of the greatest defenders of this generation, Leonardo Bonucci retired in May 2024 following a spell at Turkish side Fenerbahce. He was with the Bianconeri between 2010 and 2017 before leaving to join AC Milan.

Following a season with the Rossoneri, Bonucci would return to Turin in 2018, where he stayed for another five years. Following his departure in 2023, he joined Bundesliga outfit Union Berlin for half a season before spending the latter half in Turkey with Fenerbahce.

Additionally, he made over 120 appearances for the Italian national team, with a vital equaliser against England in the 2021 Euro final being his most memorable moment.

Currently, the veteran defender finds himself as the assistant coach to the Azzurri’s U20 team, a role he has held since October 2024.

Matthijs De Ligt

Matthijs De Ligt joined the Bianconeri from Ajax in 2019 and was, at the time, one of the most exciting talents in the world. He was made captain of his boyhood club at just 18 years old and scored the winner in the first leg of Ajax’s Champions League quarter-final victory over none other than Juventus in 2019.

In the summer of 2019, De Ligt joined Juve for a fee of £67.5 million. After making 117 appearances and winning one Scudetto and one Coppa Italia, the Dutchman departed in 2022 for Bayern Munich for £65.6 million.

Following two years in Germany, De Ligt joined Manchester United in the summer of 2024, where he has played 38 times, scoring twice.

Danilo

Danilo joined Juventus from Manchester City in 2019 and was at the club for six years before departing in January 2025. He made 213 appearances for the Old Lady. The Scudetto win in 2020 added to an already impressive trophy cabinet.

The Brazilian has had a largely successful career. In addition to his Serie A title, he has won two Premier Leagues, one La Liga title, one Club World Cup and two Champions Leagues.

The now 33-year-old finds himself reunited with former teammate, and fellow Brazilian, Alex Sandro at Flamengo.

Adrien Rabiot

Similarly to Danilo and De Ligt, Adrien Rabiot also joined Juventus in the summer of the 2019/20 season. He departed Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer after not being played, reportedly due to a refusal to extend his contract.

2019/20 was his only league title triumph during a five-year spell in Italy, although he did win the Coppa Italia twice. The 29-year-old is now back in France and playing for Marseille.

Blaise Matuidi

The second player from this team to no longer be playing is French midfielder Blaise Matuidi. Matuidi joined Juve from PSG in 2017 and made a total of 133 appearances for the club.

He enjoyed success while in Turin and was a part of the final three of Juventus‘ nine consecutive Scudetto-winning teams. Additionally, Matuidi enjoyed a successful international career and was part of France’s World Cup-winning squad in 2018.

After departing Juve in the summer of 2020, the Frenchman joined American side Inter Miami where he stayed until retiring in 2023.

Following his retirement Matuidi became a tech investor before becoming a co-founder and general partner of the American investment firm: Origins Fund.

Miralem Pjanic

The third and final player from Juve’s midfield three that day is Miralem Pjanic. Pjanic joined Juventus from AS Roma in 2016 and made 178 appearances for the Bianconeri before departing in 2020.

His time in Turin was successful as he won four Scudetti and the Coppa Italia twice. Following his Juve exit, he joined Spanish giants Barcelona where he made 30 appearances before a loan spell at Besiktas. He departed Barcelona permanently after his loan spell in Turkey and joined Sharjah Cultural Club in 2022.

He left the United Arab Emirates for Russia in June 2024 and currently plays for CSKA Moscow, where he has made 14 appearances so far.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo shocked the footballing world when he asked to leave Real Madrid in 2018 after nine trophy-filled years with Los Blancos. His request was granted and the five-time Ballon d’Or winner joined Juventus that summer for a reported fee within the region of £105 million.

He was part of the title-winning sides from 2018/19 and 2019/20 and also won the Coppa Italia once. His numbers for the Bianconeri were as impressive as you would expect from Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward scored an astonishing 101 goals in 134 games for Juventus, including one against Sampdoria to secure the ninth successive title.

He departed Juve in 2021 to rejoin Manchester United, where he would stay for just over one year, before joining Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr.

He currently has 91 goals in 102 games for Al Nassr and has become a massively influential figure in Saudi Arabian football.

Juan Cuadrado

Juan Cuadrado is still currently playing in Italy’s top flight. The now 36-year-old made over 300 appearances for Juventus across eight years and won five Scudetti with the club. He departed in 2023 on a free transfer to join Inter Milan.

After one year with the Nerazzurri, he joined Atalanta. The Columbian has made 25 appearances for La Dea this season and even helped humiliate Juventus last week, as he played 45 minutes in Atalanta’s 4-0 thrashing of his former club.

Paulo Dybala

Last, but certainly not least, from the starting 11 is Paulo Dybala. Dybala joined Juventus as a 21-year-old in 2015 and stayed with the club for seven years, departing in 2022. It was during his time with Juve that he established himself as one of the most exciting and talented players in both Europe and Serie A.

Fast forward 10 years, and the Argentinian is still regularly pulling the strings in Serie A, only now in the red and yellow colours of AS Roma. Dybala joined the Giallorossi following his Juventus exit in 2022 and has since become beloved by the Roma supporters due to his outstanding performances.

Sub: Federico Bernardeschi

The second of Juventus‘ goalscorers that day was Federico Bernardeschi, so it feels right to include him in this list. The Italian joined Juventus in 2017 and would go on to make 183 appearances for the Italian giants.

He stayed with Juve for five years and departed the club in 2022, to join MLS side Toronto FC, where he is still currently playing.
