Which League One Side Has Used the Most Players This Season So Far?

The League One season is a third of the way through with most sides having played approximately 15 games. Squad depth is often a defining factor, especially as the season goes on as managers often have to resort to players beyond their usual XI whether that be due to tactical tweaks, rotation or injuries.

In the third tier the EFL allows a maximum of 22 registered players, eight of which have to be home gown. Goalkeepers do not have to be registered, neither do under-21 players so don’t count towards the 22-player limit.

In a match day squad, League One sides can name a maximum of seven players on the bench alongside their starting 11. Seven of the players in the squad need to be home grown with at least one developed by the club, otherwise a side can only name six on the bench.

The average amount of players used this season across the 24 teams is 25. with the highest 30 and the lowest 22.

Most Number of Players Used – Wigan Athletic (30)

Shaun Maloney’s Wigan Athletic have used the most players in the league this season with 30. Five players have appeared in all 14 games, Will Aimson, Jason Kerr, Matt Smith, Thelo Aasgaard and Sam Tickle. Four players have only appeared once, Paul Dummett (just joined), Kai Payne (now at Oldham Athletic), Charlie Hughes and K’Marni Miller.

Least Number of Players Used – Shrewsbury Town (22)

The league’s bottom side, Shrewsbury Town have also used the fewest number of players across the season so far with just 22. Only two players have appeared so far in all 15 games, George Lloyd and Toby Savin, both new arrivals this season. No player has appeared fewer times than Joshua Kayode this season (2) with his minutes totalling just 44. Goalkeeper Joe Young who has yet to appear despite being in the squad on nine occasions.
