Millwall have enjoyed an excellent start to the campaign, sitting seventh in the Championship. Despite being winless in their last four, Alex Neil’s Lions sit outside of the play-offs on goal difference, and five points adrift of second-place Middlesbrough.
Therefore, the entire division remains open amid an unusual start to the second-tier season. None of the newly relegated trio, Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton, occupy the current top six, while the promoted sides appear to be under no threat of relegation.
With the division largely open, the higher-ups at Millwall have recognised this as one of their best chances for promotion. According to reports from Alan Nixon, the Lions are looking to bolster their squad in January to strengthen their squad going into the business end of the campaign.
The report states that the club will likely delve into foreign markets for two, maybe three additions. However, the London outfit are no strangers to shopping in the division below, having picked up the likes of Max Crocombe and Alfie Doughty last summer.
A key area for the club will likely be in their forward positions. At the time of writing, Millwall have scored the fewest goals in the current Championship top-half, with 18 goals scored.
Neil’s men are generally resolute defensively, despite recent results against Portsmouth, Oxford United, and Birmingham City. Leading their scoring charts are Femi Azeez and Serbian youngster Mihailo Ivanović with four and three goals respectively.
However, it is clear to see that Millwall could require a further boost of creativity to get the best out of Ivanović, who has the potential to be amongst the division’s very best.
Why Millwall Should Move for Doncaster Rovers’ Luke Molyneux
As previously mentioned, Millwall are no strangers to doing their transfer dealings in the division below, and Luke Molyneux could be a perfect match for Alex Neil.
The wide-man has been one of the EFL’s most talented forwards for the last two years, excelling under Grant McCann’s management at Doncaster Rovers.
Now in the peak years of his career at 27 years old, the right winger registered 18 goals and ten assists in all competitions last season, which helped Rovers to the League Two title.
Starting again where he left off, the wideman has remained the club’s standout forward with three goals and three assists in League One.
Versatile across a forward line, Molyneux also boasts an excellent work-rate, which has largely characterized Rovers’ successes under McCann over the years.
With creative flair and the necessary grit to match, the 27-year-old could be an excellent addition to Millwall’s squad, paying tribute to the forwards already with the club.
Would Doncaster Rovers Part Ways With Molyneux?
However, with Doncaster beginning to look over their shoulders in League One, the club would likely be unwilling to part ways with their star man.
The South Yorkshire club are currently winless in their last ten league outings, sitting 19th due to their excellent start.
Although many would not expect Rovers to succumb to relegation under McCann’s lead, it is still more than a possibility.
Maintaining the likes of Owen Bailey and Luke Molyneux will be essential in January if the club are to fend off any relegation concerns. However, with Molyneux now in the peak years of his career, the right offer could sway Rovers into selling their key man.
