Ipswich Town are reportedly set to make a significant transfer decision ahead of the January transfer window, which could in-turn carry a worry for supporters of Championship side Coventry City.

The Tractor Boys are currently in the relegation zone of the Premier League having failed to win any of their opening nine matches thus far, although they have showed promising displays against the likes of Aston Villa and Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Coventry City find themselves 18th in the Championship after a frustrating start to the campaign, with the Sky Blues having won just three of their first 12 league matches, though they did have a promising display against Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur last month.

However, a recent development was revealed on Friday which could have potential implications on Coventry City ahead of the next transfer window.

Ipswich consider Phillips recall

As reported by Football Insider, Ipswich Town are considering the possibility of terminating the loan deal of midfielder Kalvin Phillips, sending him back to Manchester City, after a disappointing start to his loan spell at Portman Road.

The 28-year-old has made seven appearances in all competitions for Kieran McKenna’s side so far this season, but has only completed 90-minutes twice, against Brighton Hove Albion and Brentford.

However, his lack of full matches has caused an element of concern with the playing staff at Ipswich Town and could lead to his loan deal being terminated in January.

How could this affect Coventry?

Despite signing Kalvin Phillips during the summer transfer window, Ipswich Town were also linked with Coventry City captain Ben Sheaf who operates in an almost identical role for the Championship side.

However, the Tractor Boys opted for Phillips whilst Sheaf was named as the new captain of Coventry City, although both players did struggle with injuries during the early stages of their respective seasons.

Sheaf has made seven appearances for the Sky Blues so far and provided an assist during Coventry’s 3-2 victory against Luton Town.

Is a move likely?

The 26-year-old is currently under contract at the CBS Arena until June 2026, but Sheaf himself recently confirmed that no talks regarding an extended contract have taken place currently and also stated how he wants to play in the Premier League, though he did admit that he’d prefer that to be with Coventry.

However, with Phillips potentially being sent back to Manchester City and the Tractor Boys finding themselves in the bottom three of the Premier League, it could force Ipswich to search for an immediate replacement, but could that be Sheaf and equally, could they tempt Coventry into selling?
