Wigan Athletic have given winger Jonny Smith the green light to complete an exit away from the League One side before Monday’s deadline.
Wigan Athletic currently sit in mid-table in League One after a tough start to their respective campaign under manager Ryan Lowe, winning two, drawing two and losing the other two matches thus far.
Despite their tricky start, Smith remains out of favour at the League One side, playing just three league minutes so far which likely explains Sunday’s development.
Smith set for Wigan exit
As reported by journalist Pete O’Rourke, Wigan Athletic are open to the idea of winger Jonny Smith completing an exit away from the football club before the window closes.
The 28-year-old could leave Wigan Athletic on either a loan or permanent deal, depending on the levels of interest that comes his way during the closing stages of the transfer window.
He is under contract at Wigan until June 2027, meaning a fee would be required to secure his services permanently.
How has he fared so far this season?
Last season, Smith was a regular for Wigan Athletic in the third tier, but things have been very different under new manager Ryan Lowe.
He has featured just twice in all competitions for Wigan thus far and one of those was a three-minute appearance during a match against Luton Town.
Smith’s only other appearance came against Stockport County during an EFL Cup victory earlier this week.
This is a significant drop off considering he made 42 appearances across all competitions last season and contributed to 12 goals in the process.
A shock change of heart
The decision to allow Smith to depart this summer is certainly an odd one when you consider he only signed a new two-year contract in March 2025.
However, it appears to be revealing that Smith may not be in Lowe’s plans hence the sudden change of minutes and the willingness to allow him to depart.
No clubs have been directly linked with his services but that doesn’t mean things won’t change on that front between now and the closing of the transfer window.
