Wigan Athletic Set To Land Second January Signing

Wigan Athletic

Wigan Athletic are closing in on their second signing of the January transfer window and this time their gain comes at the loss of a fellow League One side.

Shaun Maloney’s side have already confirmed the capture of Arsenal youngster Josh Robinson on a three-and-a-half year deal and now a second permanent signing is set to join the League One side.

As reported by Wigan Today, the club are closing in on the permanent signing of Nuremberg winger Joseph Hungbo, following the termination of his loan stint with fellow League One side Rotherham United.

They report that a six-figure fee has been agreed between the two clubs and a deal is likely to be confirmed in the coming days.

How has he fared this season?

Since joining Rotherham United on loan, Hungbo has experienced a frustrating spell back in England – having failed to register a goal or assist during his 18 appearances for Steve Evans’ side.

The loanee was stuck behind the likes of Mallik Wilks, Alex MacDonald and Joe Powell in the pecking order, which saw him register just five league starts since arriving from the German side in the summer.

Hungbo isn’t a stranger to English football however, having featured permanently for Championship side Watford as well as his loan stint with Huddersfield Town and SPFL side Ross County.

Can this arrival cement Wigan’s top half aspirations?

Currently, Wigan Athletic find themselves 16th in League One and sit closer to the relegation zone (seven points) than the play-off places (12 points), leaving Shaun Maloney’s side with work to do this month.

The club have scored 21 goals this season, which averages out at less than one per game and are currently one of the division’s lowest-scoring sides.

Adding quality within the final third will increase Wigan’s chances of adding more goals to their games which of course would result in an increase of points.

Young striker Josh Stones is also back at Wigan Athletic after his loan stint with National League side Oldham Athletic came to an end – with him scoring four goals in six league games.

Hungbo is set to become their second permanent signing of the window thus far, which represents ambition and an eye to ensure that the manager is supported and given the best tools that they can to try and push further up the standings.
