Wigan Athletic Target League Two Captain

Wigan Athletic

League One Wigan Athletic have tabled a bid for League Two Fleetwood Town captain Brendan Wiredu, according to reports.

The Latics have been busy in the transfer window already, having brought in three players as they look to strengthen ahead of the second half of the season.

Josh Robinson (Arsenal), Joseph Hungbo (FC Nurnberg), and Will Goodwin (Oxford United Loan) have already joined the squad with Josh Stones (York City) and Calvin Ramsey (Liverpool Recalled) leaving the club.

However, according to Pete O’Rourke their business is far from complete as they target Wiredu from Fleetwood Town.

Why have Wigan Athletic Targetted Wiredu?

Wiredu is a key component of the Fleetwood Town side that have struggled to make any significant impact in the league so far this season. They have already lost Johnson and Shaw to Peterborough and Northampton, respectively, and the loss of Wiredu would arguably be more significant.

The former Colchester United and Charlton Athletic man joined the club in 2022 and has gone on to make 105 appearances in all competitions.

This season he has made 19 appearances across League Two and the EFL Trophy despite missing a chunk of the campaign in November and December.

He has recovered since and regained his place in the starting line-up.

At 25 years old, he is only just entering his peak too which will mean he could have a resale value if he continues his form in League One.

Wigan working on growth

Wigan Athletic have not set the world alight this season. Despite being reasonably safe from the relegation battle, occupying 17th place, seven points clear of the drop zone, they have also failed to really challenge the teams above them.

The second half of the season can be difficult as squad fatigue plays a pivotal role in who could make a late push for the playoffs. Whilst it is unlikely that the club could find a position in the end of season competition with a 14-point difference. The club will be keen to ensure their momentum shifts upwards, heading into 2025. Fresh legs and additional leadership could help them get over the line in some more tricky fixtures between now and the end of the season.
