Winless Cheltenham Town Announce Deadline Day Signing

cheltenham,

Cheltenham Town have announced the signing of a new defender from a fellow League Two side.

The Robins are yet to win a game in League Two this season. Their sole point came on Friday night as they drew 1-1 with Salford City.

One key issue for Cheltenham so far this season has been keeping the ball out of their goal. They’ve conceded 12 goals in six games, joint most with fellow bottom two side, Shrewsbury Town.

In an attempt to improve their defence this season, the Robins have announced the signing of Sam Sherring from MK Dons.

Speaking to the club’s website, the defender said:

I‘m really happy, I’ve come in today, met the lads and trained. It was a really good vibe, and I’m looking forward now to the game tomorrow and cracking on.

“For me it’s a chance to play some consistent minutes. I’m looking to really make an impact on the team and play as much as I can whilst I’m here.

It’s still early in the season, there’s a lot games left to play and hopefully I can help the team climb up the league.”

Sherring in Need of First Team Minutes

As Sherring told the Robins’ website, he needs minutes and this move should hopefully lead to more regular minutes. Last season, he played just 10 games for MK, starting nine games altogether.

He played well in his minimal appearances in League Two, receiving a Sofascore average rating of 6.93. Defensively, he helped the team keep one clean sheet and picked up some impressive individual statistics. Sherring made two tackles per game, recovered 2.4 balls per game, and made 4.5 clearances per game.

Before last season, Sherring was a key part of the Northampton Town side that were promoted in the 2022/23 season to League One

In Northampton’s League Two campaign in 2022/23, Sherring played 36 times and received an average rating of 6.84. He continued to be a part of the Northampton side in the 2023/24 season, playing 37 games in League One, receiving a 6.9 average rating.

Is This a Good Move for Sherring and Cheltenham Town?

As discussed, the Robins need to shore up their defence. They are yet to keep a clean sheet in the league and have conceded two goals per game on average.

Sherring’s experience in this league, which includes a promotion out of the league, could be crucial to the Robins kick-starting their season.

For Sherring, it’s a chance to play regular minutes again. His time at MK didn’t likely go as planned, but this is a chance for him to get back into first-team action.
