National League side Woking have announced the signing of defender Ben Wynter on a free transfer, as confirmed via a statement on the club’s website.

The 26-year-old right back joins the Cardinals after Barnet announced that he would be leaving the club following the expiration of his contract.

Upon confirmation of the signing, manager Michael Doyle stated:

“I’m delighted to make Ben our first signing for the upcoming season, He’s a winner, and he’s always been involved with teams in the top end of the table.

“Ben is a leader on and off the pitch, and – at 26 – we feel like we’re getting him as he heads into his best years.”

Who is Ben Wynter?

Wynter began his career in the Crystal Palace academy system where he worked his way up to the U21s side but failed to make an appearance for the senior team.

During his time with Palace, he spent time on loan with Bromley and Hampton & Richmond before making his move to Hampton & Richmond a permanent one in March 2018.

His stint at Hampton was short, as the following summer he joined Torquay United, where he played a pivotal part in the clubs’ playoff charge in the National League before joining Barnet to move closer to home. He managed over 50 appearances for The Bees before making his move to Surrey this summer.

How did he fair last season?

Last season at Barnet, Wynter managed to make 14 appearances for the side that secured second in the division. During those 14 games, Wynter has shown great composure on the ball, boasting an 80% pass accuracy whilst playing as both a right-back and right of a back three.

He has averaged 7.4 recoveries per game on top of 3.8 interceptions, showing his reading of the game is of a high standard as well.

Where will Wynter fit in at Woking?

Wynter’s versatility will be a strong asset for Woking next season. He can provide competition at right-back for Moss whilst also being able to play on the right of the back three that Michael Doyle has often opted to play since joining the club.

It may not have been his best season with Barnet last term but has shown previously he is a top National League defender and could be a strong addition for Woking, opening their transfer business for the summer window.
