Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers have been linked with a move for striker Che Adams from Championship play-off semi-finalists Southampton, according to Football Transfers.
Adams, is part of the Saints side currently preparing for the second leg of their semi final encounter against West Bromwich Albion on Friday 17th May 2024, after the first leg finished goalless. However, the 16-goal striker is reportedly attracting interest from the top tier in the form of Gary O’Neil’s Wolves.
The Scotland international has attracted previous interest, with Sean Dyche’s Everton reportedly a previous admirer. The 27-year-old, however, remained with the Saints guiding them to fourth place finish, nine points behind the automatic promotion spots.
The summer transfer window is set to open next month, however Football Transfers are reporting that Wolves and Adams are already in advanced negotiations for the player ahead of his contract expiry at the end of the current campaign.
Why are Wolves interested in Adams?
Adams’s contract is set to expire this summer, and his future with Southampton is unknown. The question mark over the club’s league status next season has left some fans concerned Adams could depart this summer.
It may come as little surprise that Adams is attracting interest from the Premier League. He’s proven this season he’s a fine goal scorer, scoring 16 goals and has an xG per 90 minutes of 0.59 (statistics taken from WhoScored).
He’s also got international experience with Scotland. Adams was a used substitute in both of Scotland’s last two games against the Netherlands and Northern Ireland. He’s expected to be part of the Scotland side for the upcoming Euros, where he’ll look to add to his six goals in 25 appearances.
How has Adams performed in the Premier League?
Adams has played 124 games in the Premier League. His scoring record isn’t the most prolific, with just 25 goals, but his experience could make him an attractive signing.
His best Premier League season came in the 2020/21 season. Adams scored nine goals in a season where he only missed two Premier League games for the Saints.
With Southampton’s fate for next season still up in the air, it’s likely the Adams transfer news will have a few more twists before it’s settled.
