Signing Matheus Cunha could be about to get much harder than ever before. This is because according to reports, he is about to sign an extension with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Cunha has become the talisman of a Wolves team looking to escape relegation and is about to commit his future to the West Midlands team.
The Brazilian star, who is currently serving a two-game suspension from the FA, appears set to snub interest that has been swirling around him and stay at Molineux. This will be much to the delight of the Wolves fans who have been treated to virtuoso performances their mercurial number 10 has put up over the past two and a half years.
According to a tweet by Fabrizio Romano, Wolves have reached a verbal agreement with Cunha. The reputed Italian journalist posted on his X account, “Wolves have agreed on a new deal with Matheus Cunha! Deal verbally in place for the Brazilian star to extend the contract with salary improved. Despite interest from several clubs, Cunha’s set to sign as soon as official documents are checked/approved”.
Transfer From Atletico Madrid
Wolverhampton Wanderers had signed Cunha from Atletico Madrid initially on loan with an obligation to buy upon certain clauses being met. This turned out to be a threshold of three appearances and after that, Wolves compulsorily acquired him for €50 million.
After a slow start, Cunha began to find his feet in a Wolves jersey and started delivering a series of great displays. He ended the season with 12 goals in 32 games in the league and 14 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions.
He powered Wolves to an eventual 14th-placed finish from a relegation scrap with his 12 goals being a joint team highest. He added 7 assists to cap off a productive and impactful season in the league.
Cunha Taking It Up a Notch this Season
This season, however, his performances have gone up a notch and he is currently one of the best forwards in the League. The 25-year-old has 10 goals and four assists in 19 matches, just two goals and three assists shy of his tally last season.
He has helped Wolves navigate a very difficult season where they had to sack Gary O’Neill due to a poor run of results. They currently sit in the relegation zone at 18th but have improved considerably under new manager Vitor Pereira and with Cunha running the show, it appears only a matter of time before they leave the relegation struggle and secure a mid-table finish.
Heartbreak For Potential Suitors
There has been a lot of interest in Cunha, with Manchester United and Arsenal among those rumoured to want him. It has even been rumoured that they could be bids to take him from Wolves this January.
However, it looks like he will stay at the Molineux. This is wonderful news for the Wolves faithful who can be sure to count on their star man for the future.
If they manage to get Cunha to extend and avoid relegation this season, Wolves could even look to push forward and break into the top half of the League from next season. Certainly, if Cunha can continue his form, they will believe they have a chance against anyone.
