Wrexham AFC Beat Charlton Athletic and Birmingham City To Signing

Wrexham AFC has announced the signing of midfielder George Dobson on a free transfer linking up once again with manager Phil Parkinson.

The former Charlton Athletic midfielder had agreed on a contract with Hungarian side Fehervar but it was mutually terminated before July 1st. He signs an initial three-year contract with The Red Dragons and becomes their third summer signing after Arthur Okonkwo and Lewis Brunt.

Speaking with the club’s media team George had this to say.

“I’m genuinely delighted. It’s the Club in the EFL that everyone wants to come to and when I got the opportunity to join it was exciting.

“When I spoke to the Gaffer, and he showed his interest it felt like an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.

“I can’t wait to meet all the supporters and hopefully carry on the success of the Club and have an enjoyable season.”

Who Is George Dobson?

George came through the ranks at Arsenal and West Ham United before having his first senior loan spell with Walsall in 16/17.

He then had a loan spell in Holland for the 17/18 season with Sparta Rotterdam struggling to make an impact in their senior squad.

He then made a permanent move to Walsall, where he made 91 appearances. Upon their relegation from League One, he joined Sunderland who were managed by now Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson.

In the 20/21 season, he struggled to make an impact in Sunderland’s first team and was sent on loan to AFC Wimbledon for the second half of the season.

The midfielder then joined Charlton Athletic and went on to play over 130 games for The Addicks as well as captaining the side during the 23/24 season.

What does he bring to Wrexham?

The midfielder is vastly experienced at the League One level with over 250 games at the level. The 26-year-old midfielder is predominately defensive-minded but is also capable of playing a box-to-box type role, winning on average 6.73 duels won per 90, 7;15 recoveries per 90 as well as 40 successful passes per 90 in the league last season.

In terms of defensive midfielders, Wrexham currently have George Evans who also offers a vast experience at a higher level and in what looks like it’s going to be a hugely competitive League One this season competition for places is going to be vital.

They also have Elliot Lee and Andy Cannon to play in more advanced midfield positions who have also played at a higher level, and if Phil Parkinson keeps to his 532 system from last season there will be a lot of competition for starting places.
