Wrexham AFC vs Rotherham United League One Match Preview

Wrexham vs Rotherham United League One

Wrexham AFC will be looking to carry on their promotion push as they welcome Steve Evans’ Rotherham United side to North Wales. Phil Parkinson’s side will be on the hunt for all three points to stay in the race for the automatic promotion places.

The home side currently sit in third place in League One just two points behind second place Wycombe Wanderers, and as the season creeps into the final stages with just 12 games left to play every point is vital. The visitors come into this game in 14th place but have won their last two matches and will be looking to finish the season as strong as possible.

Both sides are coming into this game off the back of wins in their previous game. The hosts left it late as they beat Huddersfield Town through a Steven Fletcher goal and the away side beat promotion-chasing Leyton Orient.

Wrexham Form Guide

Phil Parkinson’s side head into this game in good form having lost just one of their last five games with two wins and two draws in that period. Parkinson will hope his side can add more goals to their game having scored just six times in their last five games.

Wrexham still retain the second best home record in the division, second just behind league leaders Birmingham City. This is despite failing to win any of their last four games at Stōk Cae Ras, which just shows how impressive they can be on home soil.

Rotherham United Form Guide

The Millers head into this game after back-to-back wins in the league for the first time since December. It has been a tricky time in their last five games with two wins, two defeats and one draw for the visitors.

Their 1-0 win over Leyton Orient in their previous game was their first win with a clean sheet since New Years Day. Just like the hosts the visitors will need to improve in front of goal with just five goals scored in their last five games.

Wrexham Team News

Midfielder Andy Cannon remains out for the season for the hosts while goalkeeper Callum Burton is also expected to miss the remainder of the campaign with a thigh injury he picked up in December.

However, with no fresh injuries from the previous games, Parkinson will likely stick with the same side that beat Huddersfield and drew with Bolton Wanderers.

Rotherham United Team News

Steve Evans has confirmed that the only likely player to return to the squad from the players that are out is Liam Kelly. Evans also confirmed that Alex MacDonald, Sean Raggett and Zack Jules are definitely missing for their trip to North Wales.

Manchester United loanee Dan Gore will also be missing from the squad that faces Wrexham as the midfielder has returned to Manchester to recover from a foot injury.

Key Players to Watch

For Wrexham, Ollie Rathbone has had an excellent first season in North Wales with eight goal contributions from midfield. The 28-year-old was a real problem for Huddersfield in the last game with the midfielder creating three chances in the game for his teammates and will no doubt be a handful for Rotherham in this game.

The visitors will hope that forward Sam Nombe can continue his impressive form this season when they face Wrexham. The 26-year-old has 13 goal contributions this season with nine goals and four assists. He has scored three of those goals in his last four games so is a player in very good form and will be a real threat in this game.

Wrexham vs Rotherham United Prediction

The reverse fixture was a tight 1-0 victory for Wrexham and, likely, this game will also be a tightly contested fixture between the two sides, especially with Rotherham picking up form in recent weeks.

Despite their recent struggles, Wrexham’s home form cannot be overlooked this season and will play a massive part especially with the automatic promotion places in sight.

Writer’s Prediction: Wrexham 1-0 Rotherham United
