Liverpool winger Lewis Koumas is at the centre of a transfer battle between the newly promoted duo, Birmingham City and Wrexham, according to Ian Doyle at the Liverpool Echo.
After a successful loan spell in the Championship last season with Stoke City, the 19-year-old is expected to spend another season away from the Merseyside giants.
The 19-year-old scored six times and assisted on three occasions for the Potters, proving crucial as the Potters maintained their Championship status.
Transfer Battle for Lewis Koumas
Both Wrexham and Birmingham City are understood to be interested in a permanent deal for the forward, while Championship sides Norwich City, Hull City, and Sheffield United would only be interested in a loan move.
Koumas broke through into Liverpool’s first team during an injury crisis at the start of 2024. The youngster scored on his senior Reds debut in the FA Cup win over Southampton in February 2024.
A Welsh international, Koumas has earned six caps for the senior men’s team, having also tallied over 50 appearances at the senior level.
Pre-season with Liverpool was difficult, as the young forward struggled for minutes amid the emergence of 16-year-old star Rio Ngumoha, and is expected to depart the club for regular gametime before the transfer deadline.
Additionally, the winger was absent for the U21s outing on Monday night against Leicester City, suggesting a move away from Anfield is edging closer.
Wrexham or Birmingham City?
A move to Wrexham would make sense geographically, due to the youngster’s Welsh roots and proximity to Liverpool.
However, Phil Parkinson generally sets up a 3-5-2 system, which could place the forward behind the likes of Kieffer Moore, Josh Windass, and Nathan Broadhead.
Birmingham City could emerge as a better fit, with the left-wing position being a clear target area for Chris Davis, as Keshi Anderson currently holds the starting position for the Blues.
Therefore, the move to St. Andrews offers the potential for more minutes, as the forward’s versatility could be used in Davis’ 4-2-3-1 system, as opposed to Parkinson’s attack consisting of wing-backs and two strikers.
While Anderson has made a brilliant start to the campaign, the additional option and added competition, combined with excellent potential, could make Koumas an astute piece of business for the West Midlands outfit.
