Wrexham have bolstered their defensive options through the signing of Manchester City defender Callum Doyle, who was labelled as “quality” by former Norwich City teammate Angus Gunn.

The 21-year-old centre-back has put pen to paper on a four-year deal at the SToK Cae Ras. The fee has been undisclosed by the club, but is reported to be around £7.5 million.

Doyle Signing Strengthens Wrexham Backline

The Welsh side are looking to achieve four consecutive promotions from the National League to the Premier League for the first time in history. A meteoric rise has endured in North Wales after Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney co-bought the then non-league Club.

It’s been a poor start to the Championship season as The Red Dragons have lost to both Southampton and West Bromwich Albion. A reality check for Wrexham.

The club have already splashed the cash this summer with the acquisitions of Josh Windass, Lewis O’Brien, Conor Coady, Kieffer Moore, Danny Ward and Nathan Broadhead. Phil Parkinson has his eye on yet another promotion, this time to the top flight.

The signing of Callum Doyle further strengthens what was already a solid backline. Just 34 goals were conceded last season, the second best in League One.

However, conceding five goals in just two Championship games has prompted the Wrexham owners to get their wallet out yet again and spend big on a proven centre back.

At only 21 years old, Doyle has already made more than 100 appearances in the Championship and League One. An impressive CV to his name, the defender has also won promotion twice, once in the second tier and once in the third tier, achieving this feat with Leicester City and Sunderland, respectively.

The young defender was also part of the impressive 2022/2023 Coventry City side that narrowly lost out to Luton Town in the play-off final on penalties.

This is another smart signing from Wrexham. Doyle is their best defender now, but he also has the potential to be a world-class Premier League player. Fans of the Red Dragons will be hoping that it is with them.
