Wrexham Owners Under Fire For Unrealistic Manager Quotes

Wrexham’s Hollywood owners have been warned that talk of a “job for life” for their manager is “very naive”, with former EFL striker Don Goodman questioning whether such certainty can survive football’s reality.

The Championship promotion hopefuls have surged up the divisions under Phil Parkinson, and co-owner Rob McElhenney recently admitted he cannot see a scenario in which the manager is dismissed. That stance, however, has raised eyebrows.

Goodman questions Wrexham’s “job for life” stance

McElhenney revealed that Parkinson once told him every manager expects to be sacked eventually, only for the Wrexham co-owner to reject that logic entirely.

“He said to me very early in our conversations, ‘One thing I know for sure is you will fire me one day’. I said, ‘Really?’ He said every football manager knows at some stage he will get fired. I said, ‘OK, that’s fair, and I get that’s part of the gig’.

“But Ryan and I talk all the time, and I just don’t see a scenario where Phil Parkinson gets fired. From our perspective, he’s got the job for life. Unless he finds another job he wants to go off and do, he’s our coach. He’s our manager. He’s our guy.”

The sentiment reflects the loyalty that has defined Wrexham’s rise from the National League into the Championship play-off mix. Stability has been central to that climb.

But speaking to Grosvenor Casinos, Goodman warned that permanence in football is rarely realistic if interpreted literally.

“If he’s purely talking about managing the team, then it’s a very naive comment.

“If results turn negative and it looks like Phil Parkinson has taken them as far as he could, I think Parkinson himself would expect maybe to be relieved of his duties.”

Goodman suggested the phrase could apply to a broader role within the club structure, but stressed that management is always conditional.

“It’s just football that if results turn horrible next season and they find themselves in a relegation battle, then nobody would be surprised if Phil Parkinson is asked to move upstairs or found a role behind the scenes. After all, it’s a results-based business.”

Importantly, the former striker was quick to underline the scale of Parkinson’s achievement, arguing that even a Championship play-off push would have exceeded realistic expectations after promotion from League One.

“You have to remember where he’s taken them from. The National League to a play-off campaign in the Championship would have been beyond anybody at Wrexham’s wildest dreams.

“I should imagine there will be some kind of recognition, a stand named after him or a statue outside, no matter what happens from this point forward.”

Wrexham currently sit in the play-off positions, having lost just twice in their last 13 matches in all competitions, and continue to invest heavily as they chase a long-term Premier League ambition.

Dangerous backing

Backing a manager publicly is smart. Declaring him untouchable is different.

Wrexham’s rise has been fuelled by belief, but it has also been driven by sharp recruitment, decisive spending, and a willingness to evolve quickly. Those are not the traits of a club that will tolerate regression for long.

Parkinson has earned enormous credit. He may well be the man who takes them to the Premier League. But if they reach that level and struggle, or if momentum stalls badly in the Championship, the emotional language will meet competitive pressure.

If the “job for life” line is tested, it will not be during a surge. It will be the first time the climb slows. That moment, not this one, will define how different Wrexham’s ownership model truly is.
