Wrexham Plan Bid For League One Striker

Wrexham are usually content to wait in transfer windows. Whilst other clubs are likely to strike early to secure their targets, under the ownership of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, Wrexham have seen great success in the later stages of transfer windows.

The League Two side are set to repeat this strategy, with Pete O’Rourke reporting the Red Dragons are plotting a late move to sign former Championship and current League One striker Jack Marriot from Fleetwood Town, with Oxford United and Stevenage also interested in securing the striker’s signature.

The 29-year-old has scored five times this season but has failed to register an assist despite creating five big chances for the struggling Cod Army, with Charlie Adam’s men currently finding themselves bottom of the League One table with 19 points to their tally, 11 points from safety.

Formerly of Peterborough United, Marriot went on to bag 12 goals and claim four assists in the 22/23 League One season, and in Posh’s final Championship season in the 21/22 season, where he scored nine times in 28 appearances whilst at the Weston Homes Stadium, before making the switch to join Fleetwood at the start of the season.

Wrexham have been in the market for a striker to play alongside the electric Paul Mullin, with traditional strike partner Ollie Palmer struggling with an injury as of late, making just one appearance in December, and making a further two appearances off the bench in January.

Phil Parkinson’s side are looking to achieve back-to-back promotions following their National League success last season, with the club currently sitting second in the table, five points adrift from current League Two leaders Stockport County at the top of the pile.

This is Wrexham. Any doubts about being able to beat League One clubs to Marriot should be squashed. They got League Two’s top goalscorer to drop down to the Vanerama National League, and the hype of Wrexham has built even further since then.

The prospect of playing for an upwardly-moving team must be tempting for Marriot, especially given the other main striker, Palmer, is 32 years old and struggling with injuries.

Wrexham would be getting a very capable striker alongside Mullin, having failed to achieve a similar transfer in the summer window. Brandon Hanlan remained at Wycombe, and awkwardly, failed to submit the transfer of Luke Armstrong in the final hours of the transfer window.

He has clear League One quality and could continue to help the Red Dragons grow from strength to strength as the years go on if the transfer was to come to fruition.
