Unsurprisingly, Wrexham have been involved in another hectic summer after gaining promotion for the third straight year to the Championship. That is set to continue, with the Red Dragons set to complete a shock swoop before deadline day.

Big money arrivals Kieffer Moore, Nathan Broadhead and Callum Doyle have all arrived at the Stok Cae Ras on permanent deals. However, Wrexham aren’t done there.

Wrexham Agree Fee With Coventry For Signing Of Ben Sheaf

According to Pete O’Rourke, Wrexham have agreed a fee with fellow Championship side Coventry City for the signing of star midfielder Ben Sheaf.

Sheaf is set for talks with the Welsh side regarding personal terms.

A medical has also been booked, with Wrexham acting fast to complete the deal before Monday’s 7pm transfer deadline.

With Sheaf’s contract up next summer, the Red Dragons look to have secured a cut-price deal.

Phil Parkinson is still looking to add to his side, as he aims for an historic fourth promotion on the trot. Wrexham have won promotion from the National League, League Two and League One in the last three seasons. They currently sit in 15th place in the Championship, after only picking up their first win in Saturday’s impressive two-nil victory against Millwall.

Shock Coventry Exit?

Sheaf has played just seven minutes this season for Frank Lampard’s side. The 27 year old came on in the 81st minute against Hull City on the opening day. However, Sheaf was subbed off again in the 88th minute after sustaining a groin injury. The midfielder was an unused substitute in Saturday’s disappointing two-all draw with Oxford United.

Spirits certainly haven’t been dampened at the Coventry Building Society Arena after Sheaf’s injury. A five-three victory against Derby County was followed by a seven-one thrashing of QPR. These results as well as yesterday’s Oxford draw leave Sky Blues in fifth place with an unbeaten record.

Although the Englishman was a standout last season in the Coventry side that lost to Sunderland in the play-off semi finals, Lampard seems to have pushed Sheaf to the way-side this season. The former Chelsea manager seems to prefer a midfield partnership of Victor Torp and Matt Grimes, which is clearly working so far this season.

Therefore, it’s not that much of a shock that Sheaf and Coventry are looking to part ways in the next 24 hours.

Good Move For Wrexham?

Wrexham have continued their summer trend of signing experienced Championship players, after the previously mentioned acquisitions of Moore, Broadhead and Doyle.

Sheaf will add much needed energy, as he looks set to replace 34 year old Matty James in the defensive midfield position.

The 27 year old’s strong tackling and impressive ability to break up play will add another dimension to Phil Parkinson’s side.

Sheaf also possesses a solid technical base, after accumulating an 86.5% pass accuracy last season in the Championship. This was in the top statistics for Championship midfielders last season, making Sheaf one of the best in his position.

This signing will only add to a Wrexham side who will have an outside shot at making the play-offs this season.
