Wrexham look likely to secure the signing of former Arsenal youth George Dobson after his release from Charlton Athletic, following a collapsed move to Hungarian side Fehervar.
The 26-year-old, who Addicks’ manager Nathan Jones reiterated that he wanted to keep at the Valley next season, signed a pre-contract deal with Fehervar in February. However, pulled out of a proposed deal due to personal reasons, according to the South London Press.
Now, according to Football League World, ambitious League One newcomers Wrexham are closing in on a free transfer for the player.
Dobson has been with the Addicks since 2021, moving from Sunderland on a free transfer and has since gone on to make 144 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals and contributing 11 assists.
He has also had spells at Walsall, Sparta Rotterdam, West Ham United and AFC Wimbledon.
A blow for Charlton or a boost for Wrexham?
Wrexham are signing a player that is not just a free agent coming to the end of his deal, but a player that Charlton were serious about keeping hold of. With the Addicks likely to be aiming for promotion this season (based on comments from Jones), a move to a potential League One rival may come as a serious blow.
However, the player has been set to leave for a number of months, with his agreed deal abroad been known since February, so the club will likely be well prepared for his exit. But the change of heart and remaining in the same league may sting a little. Unless, the Addicks hierarchy had already moved on from the player and are no longer interested.
For Wrexham it is another show of intent, poaching a player, who was wanted by a big club for the league will demonstrate their pull and willingness to target some of the best talent and take quality opportunities when they are presented to them.
