Wigan Athletic are reportedly in talks to sign Wrexham’s heroic striker Paul Mullin after he fell out of favour with manager Phil Parkinson during their League One promotion season.
Mullin has been a vital part of Wrexham’s resurgence from the National League after he joined the club from Cambridge United in 2021.
Finishing the 2020/21 season as League Two’s top scorer, many were surprised to see the Englishman make the step down to the National League, but the ambitions of new Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were critical.
After two brilliant seasons with the Red Dragons, he has struggled in League One this season and looks set to leave the club this summer as they move into the Championship.
Mullin to Wigan?
According to Pete O’Rourke, Wigan Athletic are in talks to sign Wrexham striker Paul Mullin on loan for the 2025/26 season.
The 30-year-old only managed three goals for the Red Dragons this season and has struggled for game time due to the wealth of options they now have in attack.
Mullin could rejuvenate the late stages of his career with a loan move, and it appears that Wigan are the ones who will take a chance on his talents this summer.
The Right Decision for Wrexham?
As much as Mullin has become a cult hero in Wrexham thanks to his heroics in both the National League and League Two, last season showed that he is likely not at the level to make the step up to the Championship.
Wrexham’s ambitions next season will be to compete in the top half of the Championship, and it is unlikely that Mullin will be able to compete with the level of players.
With talented strikers such as Sam Smith, Jay Rodriguez, and new signing Ryan Hardie already at the club, it is likely best for both them and Mullin for him to move on.
A Big Boost for Wigan?
Although he struggled last season for Wrexham, Mullin’s pedigree in the EFL is fantastic, and he certainly has more to give in League One than he showed.
With injuries hampering his season and his game time being limited due to the great form of Wrexham’s striker options, it is no surprise that Mullin could not match his form from the previous two campaigns.
If he can get a consistent run of games as a starter for the Latics next season, he could be a key part of Wigan’s side as they look to improve from a poor 2024/25 campaign.
