Wycombe Wanderers Creative Star Attracting Interest as Contract Enters Final Year

Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe Wanderers suffered defeat in the League One play-offs last season and have seemingly embarked on an overhaul of the playing squad this summer, with another star player rumoured to be attracting interest.

Mike Dodds’ team have seen the likes of Joe Low and Franco Ravizzoli find new clubs in League One, with several squad players also moving on, including forwards Brandon Hanlon and Sam Vokes.

However, they could be about to suffer a major setback in their fight for promotion next season as one of their standout stars attracts interest.

Star Player Impresses in Promotion Push

While most of the plaudits at Wycombe Wanderers are reserved for the excellent Richard Kone, there is one player who filled in multiple positions and was a key reason the club stayed in the battle for automatic promotion.

32-year-old Luke Leahy has played at left-back for much of his career, but has proven himself to be more than capable of filling in central midfield roles. After scoring 11 goals and providing a further seven assists in 2023/24, the former Shrewsbury Town man continued to set the standard in 2024/25.

His return of four goals may have been a dip from the previous campaign. However, it is impressive considering he played in multiple positions, and he did top the assist charts at the club with a tally of six.

Further evidence of his influence is Leahy topping the charts at the club for key passes, accurate long balls and sitting just behind Cameron Humphreys for big chances created. This is in addition to the player captaining the side on a handful of occasions in League One.

That level of influence would be difficult to replace, but that may just be what Wycombe Wanderers will have to do if reports are to be believed.

Wycombe Wanderers Man Wanted By League One Clubs

It would surely take an offer from a club with significant ambition to tempt the player to move from one of the main promotion contenders, but Pete O’Rourke is reporting that several League One clubs have made enquiries about Leahy’s availability this summer, with the creative star moving into the final 12 months of his contract.

Wycombe Wanderers have brought in Northern Ireland international Caolan Boyd-Munce from St. Mirren, and his versatility and goalscoring ability from midfield are similar to those possessed by Leahy.

However, the former Middlesbrough midfielder does not have the experience to replace Leahy and arguably only had his breakthrough campaign in 2024/25 in the Scottish Premiership, so it would be a major risk to consider him as a direct replacement.

Amid reports that Wycombe Wanderers were considering offering a record-breaking deal to keep hold of Kone, it is arguable that Leahy is just as important to the club and that his contract should be a priority. This will be an interesting one to watch this summer.
