Wycombe Wanderers Dealt January Blow

Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe Wanderers have missed out on one of their January targets after the player in question opted to sign a new long-tern contract with his current club.

The Chairboys are currently second in League One and produced a 95th-minute winner on Tuesday evening to maintain pressure on leaders Birmingham City, who also managed to squeeze past Huddersfield Town.

It has already been a busy month for the Chairboys, losing manager Matt Bloomfield to Luton Town and loanee Aaron Morley, whilst securing several new players as they continue their quest to return to the Championship.

However, as confirmed by journalist Charlie Gordon, Charlton Athletic defender Lloyd Jones snubbed interest elsewhere to extend his stay with the League One side, in a decision that has since been confirmed via the club’s website.

Wycombe Wanderers held a strong interest in signing Jones according to Gordon but it wasn’t enough to lure him to Adams Park.

How long is he under contract for?

Jones was initially facing the possibility of becoming a free agent at the end of the season, posing a major risk to Charlton Athletic’s chances of lodging a late playoff bid, as more rival clubs could have swooped in.

However, this threat has been short lived with Jones securing a new two year deal with Nathan Jones’ side, meaning he is now under contract until June 2027.

Is this the right decision?

Ultimately, whether Jones has truly made the right decision or not won’t be recognised for at least six more months.

This is because Jones could inspire Charlton’s late play-off charge, or he could see a drop in performance levels and make the decision seem negative.

However, given Jones’ performances so far this season and how ever-present he has been under Nathan Jones, losing him would have dealt a significant blow to the club and would have in-turn be very challenging to try and replace.

The 29-year-old has made 21 league appearances this season, scoring twice as well as averaging a 7.48 match rating across those games.

Have Wycombe missed out on a huge name or has he made the correct call?
