Wycombe Wanderers are in talks to sign former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson on a free transfer this summer, as reported by Football Transfers.

Matt Bloomfield’s side isn’t alone in their pursuit of the 25-year-old who is available for free after he was let go by Championship side Sheffield Wednesday upon the expiry of his contract.

How did Bakinson fair last season?

Bakinson began the 2023/24 Championship season with Sheffield Wednesday, making ten appearances in all competitions, scoring his only goal during a victory against Stockport County in the EFL Cup.

However, he was loaned out to League One side Charlton Athletic in January where he saw out the remainder of the season. Featuring in midfield, Bakinson scored once in 15 league appearances with his strike coming during a 3-1 victory against Cheltenham Town in March.

Which other sides are chasing him?

According to Football Transfers, Bakinson is in advanced talks with Wycombe Wanderers over a potential move to the club, but former loan side Charlton Athletic are reportedly keen to pursue a permanent move for the midfielder.

Charlton boss Nathan Jones gave Bakinson his professional debut whilst the pair were at Luton Town, but the new owners at Wycombe are reportedly hoping to build a promotion-contending side ahead of the new season.

Would this move benefit Wycombe Wanderers?

Bakinson has Championship and League One experience as well as promotion experience which makes him an attractive prospect for clubs this summer.

The 25-year-old made 25 appearances last season across the two divisions and can operate in numerous positions in the middle of the pitch, which would further bolster Wycombe’s midfield options this summer.

Similarly, Bakinson is also available on a free transfer which presents him as a low-risk signing for the Chairboys and beating another League One side to his signature could also give the club confidence to use in the remainder of the window.
