Wycombe Wanderers Plot Swoop For Championship Man

Wycombe Wanderers have set their sights on an ambitious loan move for midfielder Xavier Simons from Championship side Hull City, ahead of Monday’s 11pm deadline.

The Chairboys are currently second in League One and remain in pole position to secure automatic promotion back to the Championship, but are in the market for potentially more additions as they aim to solidify their spot.

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Wycombe Wanderers have entered negotiations with Hull City for the loan signing of midfielder Xavier Simons on a deal until the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Wycombe face competition from a currently unnamed League One rival ahead of a potential move to Adam’s Park.

How has he fared this season?

The 21-year-old has featured 20 times in the Championship for the Tigers so far this season, with 13 of them being starts, which could create confusion as to why he’s been allowed to depart on loan.

Simons has also scored twice for Hull City so far this season, with both coming in consecutive Championship appearances against Burnley and Derby County at the end of October.

However, Simons hasn’t featured for Hull City in the league for almost a month, though he did feature in their shock defeat against Doncaster Rovers in the FA Cup.

What sort of player is he?

Simons is a versatile footballer, who can cover several different positions. He began the campaign in central midfield for the Tigers, but has also played as a defensive midfielder and can cover the right-hand side if required.

He’s averaged a pass completion rate of 87% for the Tigers so far this season and is likely to compete against the likes of Josh Scowen and Tyreeq Bakinson moving into the remainder of the campaign.

Wycombe aim to beat Championship interest

Although Wycombe Wanderers have entered negotiations to sign the 21-year-old, they haven’t been the only side that’s shown interest in Simons throughout the transfer window thus far.

Championship side Queen’s Park Rangers also showed interest in signing the midfielder during the current transfer window, but Hull were reluctant to let him move to another second tier side.

This gives Wycombe Wanderers the advantage to get a deal done for the midfielder and further bolster their options and depth, ahead of a difficult but exciting end to the 2024/25 season where they could end it as a Championship side.
