National League leaders York City have reportedly agreed a deal to sign a sought-after forward to further strengthen their aspirations of returning to the EFL this season.
Despite the likes of Ollie Pearce and Dipo Akinyemi at their disposal, York have reportedly had a bid accepted for another option, leaving one of their title-rivals in a weaker position as a result.
According to an exclusive reveal by Football League World, York City have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Wigan Athletic forward Josh Stones permanently following the conclusion of his loan spell with fellow National League side Oldham Athletic.
Is this a good addition for York?
Stones is a striker but can operate on the left or right of a forward line too, being able to link play well whilst being clinical in front of goal.
He has featured a handful of times for Wigan Athletic this season, before joining Oldham Athletic on loan where he followed on from a previous spell, scoring four times in six league appearances for Micky Mellon’s side.
However, he has since returned to the League One side where they are reportedly prepared to cash in on the forward.
Stones will add more goals and an overall strength to York City’s attacking options moving into the second half of the campaign.
Where does he fit in?
With the club having several strong attacking options at their disposal already, it will be intriguing to see where Stones would fit into that attack.
With Oldham, Stones played mainly as a striker in a front two alongside James Norwood within a 3-5-2 system.
York on the other hand operate with a 4-2-3-1 system with Ollie Pearce being the main man up front.
However, York currently have David Ajiboye on loan from Peterborough United and that deal is set to expire this month, possibly pathing the way for Stones to operate from the right or a reshuffle where he’d play through the middle and Marvin Armstrong could move out wide.
York City fans, what are your thoughts on this signing?
