League One Charlton Athletic are set to secure the signing of recently relegated Championship side Luton Town midfielder Luke Berry on a free transfer, with the player set to undergo a medical, according to Football Insider

It was revealed earlier in the week that the League One side were closing in on a deal for Berry and defender Josh Edwards after securing the signing of Will Mannion this week. However, according to reports the 31-year-old former Barnsley man is set to become the club’s second summer signing.

The player came through the ranks at Cambridge United, also enjoying a brief spell at Barnsley in 2014/15. He has been with Luton Town since 2017, aiding their climb through the leagues to the top flight. After 184 appearances for the club he was released at the end of the season.

Charlton Athletic Moving Quickly

Charlton are, at present, one of the most active in the transfer target, seemingly moving to secure a number of players before the transfer window officially opens on Friday. Nathan Jones knows he has a job on his hands to rebuild the former Premier League club after years of stagnating in the third tier. He indicated when he signed Will Mannion that he is looking to secure players that aren’t just ready to play in League One but also the Championship, which demonstrates a clear show of intent. The Addicks finished 16th in the table last season with Michael Appleton facing the axe mid-way through the campaign. Jones will be hoping to push his side further towards the business end with many of his key targets secured before pre-season.

it is perhaps surprising that there was not as much competition for Berry, at 31, he still has several years left in his career and boasts a wealth of experience throughout the leagues. With Berry all but confirmed it will be interesting to see if Edwards follows him through the door.
