Could We See PS3 Games Coming To PS5 Soon?

Sony may be working on a method to bring native support to PS3 games on PlayStation 5 hardware in an exciting boost for classic gaming.

PlayStation 5 users can gain access to games from previous generations of the console via Backwards Compatibility, using in-build emulators to play PS1, PS2, PSP and PS4 games natively.

However, due to the complex changes made to the PS3 infrastructure, it has been difficult to get games from the third generation to run on modern hardware. Currently, users will have to stream the games using aging server blades implemented a decade ago for PlayStation Now (the predecessor to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium).

This difficulty has been gatekeeping games such as Metal Gear Solid Four, Resistance, Killzone and Infamous and more from being accessible to those without a PS3 console and a copy of the game. Whilst some have had remasters or even remakes, such as The Last of Us others have been left to the pages of PlayStation history.

There has been a fresh update to Sony’s attempts to bring their old games to PS5. Infamous leaker Jeff Grubb backed up claims that Sony may well be working on a PS3 emulator speaking to Game Mess Mornings.

Grubb stated that they had been working on the project for “quite some time” and had anticipated it being announced earlier this year. Despite the development not breaking in the first half of 2024, Grubb added that it “doesn’t mean it will never happen.”

What does this mean for PlayStation gamers?

For a period Sony seemingly gave up on backwards compatibility, whilst their competitors Xbox seemingly focused on it. But with the addition of the classics catalogue and the first PS2 games starting to emerge on the system it does indicate that perhaps Sony are more willing to embrace it than in previous years.

It is expected that these games will be available for purchase, rather than accessible through PS+ to recoup some of the money it has cost to develop them, in a similar approach to how Microsoft has looked at their classic games.

It could mean that some of the best PlayStation games of all time are now available for new audiences.
