League One Exeter City have opened talks with former Wigan Athletic striker Josh Magennis over a potential move to St James Park this summer.

The Northern Irishman was released by the Latics at the end of the season after two years with the League One side. Magennis made 98 appearances for the club, contributing 14 goals before his departure.

He has previous spells with Aberdeen, Kilmarnock, Hull City, Charlton Athletic, Bolton Wanderers, St Mirren, Cardiff City and a brief spell at Grimsby Town.

Now a free agent, the 33-year-old is reportedly in talks to join the Grecians on a free transfer this summer, according to Alan Nixon.

Another Season Of League One Stability For Exeter City?

Since their promotion from League Two in the 21-22 season, Exeter City have stabilised themselves as a League One club, finishing mid-table in both of the following seasons.

They are yet to bring any players into the squad this transfer window, but also haven’t lost any significant players yet, with perhaps the exception of Zak Jules who has linked up with Steve Evans at Rotherham.

Manager Gary Caldwell has largely kept together the squad which he has built and can look to add additional quality this window.

The one major thing missing from the side was goals. They only scored 46 goals in 46 games, giving them a -15 goal difference, the Grecians were the lowest scoring side outside of the bottom seven, with even relegated Fleetwood Town scoring more (49 goals to 46). No player achieved double figures across all competitions.

The addition of quality attacking options could push his side further up the table.

Does Magennis fit the bill?

Despite having, some would argue, a great season at Wigan last year, Magennis still outscored any Exeter player. He has also scored double figures in four different seasons across his career, including 18 for Hull City in League One in the 2020/21 season. If Gary Caldwell can unlock the 33-year-old’s goalscoring ability, they could boost their chances at finishing higher than mid-table in the upcoming season.
